Highlights and photos from Toy Fair 2011 – The Walking Dead, Terminator, Duke Nukem, Pirates LEGOs, BioShock, Ghostbusters, and more
I visited Toy Fair 2011 today in New York from the comfort of my office in Florida by way of coverage of the annual event from Collider.com and ActionFigs.com.
I wish I had been there in person, but since I wasn’t, sifting through photo galleries was the next best thing. And I pulled out pictures of the toys, action figures, and other fun things that I’ll most likely be buying when they hit the market soon.
So here’s my vicarious photo report from Toy Fair 2011 of what I’m most looking forward to…
Terminator
I have quite the collection of Terminator 2 figures already, so I’m quite happy to see NECA coming out with a couple of Arnold from the original Terminator as well. Plus more fun sculpts of the T-1000 are always fun too:
Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 35 – Indiana Jones goes Back to the Future with the Terminator in a Star Wars galaxy
In the continuing saga of reorganizing our bonus room, I’ve filled around a quarter of our new IKEA shelves with action figures and collectibles from Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Terminator, and a few Tarantino movies. There’s still plenty of room left – and far too many collectibles yet to place. Work continues…
TweetBest new toys and collectibles at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con
Judging from the amount of toys showcased at Comic-Con, if I attended, I would probably spent most of my time staring at them wishing the release dates were sooner than later. Of course, that’s exactly what I’m doing here at home, so I suppose there’s really no difference. Anyway, here are my favorite toys, sculptures, and other collectibles that I’ve found photos of:
Ghostbusters from Mattel
I’m extremely excited to finally get my hands on some official Ghostbusters action figures. Egon comes out in just a couple of weeks followed by the rest over time. There’s even a figure of movie “villain” Walter Peck coming out, complete with containment unit accessory. It appears that the figures were guarded at Comic-Con by some Ghostbusters booth babes.

TweetTHURSDAY THEME PARK: Universal Studios’ Terminator 2: 3D

I can’t think of a better way to conclude my series of posts leading up to the release of Terminator Salvation than with a look at…
Universal Studios’ Terminator 2: 3D
When I write that I want to take a “look” at Terminator 2: 3D, I mean it literally. Ever since I first saw this incredible attraction, which is essentially an extension of Terminator 2: Judgement Day (the movie), I wanted to own a copy to watch over and over at home. James Cameron (and his crew) did an incredible job bringing the world of Terminator 2 back to life in this action-packed show that’s unlike any other 3D movie anywhere, combining live character doubles and special effects in the theater with on-screen big-budget scenes starring the top actors from the film.
So I was happy to have now found a variety of good-enough-for-now versions of the attraction on YouTube. None of them are crystal clear or worth blowing up on a big screen in a home theater, but they are enough to satisfy any T2:3D craving for those of you who can’t run out to Universal Studios to see it in person. So here are the best versions I could find online:
This last video features a clip of the finale of the T2:3D attraction in anaglyph 3D, so you can enjoy the multi-dimensional fun at home with a pair of red/blue glasses. Just be sure to skip the first couple of minutes of excessively-long scrolling text:
While I never want to see Terminator 2: 3D leave Universal Studios, it’s inevitable that eventually it will no longer be relevant and be replaced by something inferior. When that time comes, I hope that they have the good sense to follow in the footsteps of Back to the Future: The Ride and release the entire T2:3D film on DVD, Blu-Ray, or whatever home video technology is popular at the time. Maybe it’ll even be in 3D by then.
TweetWEDNESDAY WHINE: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Cancelled by Fox

Terminator Salvation is almost here which means that my series of Terminator-related posts is soon coming to a close, but not before I whine about…
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Cancelled by Fox
Help me understand this timeline:
- Fox decides to resurrect the Terminator franchise with a show called Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
- The show premieres with 4.1 million people watching. Not a bad start for a sci-fi show.
- After the first season, Fox brings the show back for a second but dooms it to the Friday night slot – a ratings black hole.
- Meanwhile, a fourth Terminator film, Terminator Salvation, is produced and scheduled to be released to theaters just a couple of months after the second season of Fox’s show ends. The film is heavily marketed with toys, promotional partnerships, and plenty of television commercials.
- Rather than capitalizing on the hype from the first Terminator film in six years, Fox decides to pull the plug on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
I don’t get it. Fox decided to renew Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, which had comparably low ratings as Terminator. The network’s president of entertainment attempted to explain why one show was renewed while the other was cancelled, though none of it really makes a whole lot sense.
I really enjoyed Fox’s Terminator series. It had a few dull episodes, but I thought that they did a good job of exploring aspects of the characters that had not been seen in the films.
In the end, no real reason is given other than they felt Terminator had run its course and didn’t have a future. As Sarah Connor often said, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves. In this case, Fox appears to have decided the Connors’ fate for them instead.
