365 Adventures in 2011: Day 246 – Prosciutto three ways

With some free time on my hands today (for once) thanks to Labor Day, I decided it was time to cook! As I was hunting through a few cookbooks, Michelle said she wanted homemade pizza for dinner. I had been narrowing down my choices already and her suggestion gave me an opportunity to try a few new things.

When she said pizza, I immediately thought of the wonderful prosciutto and melon pizza from Via Napoli at Epcot that I’d been wanting to try to make at home for quite a while. But I was also eyeballing a recipe in one of Giada de Laurentiis’ cookbooks for a lamb burger wrapped in prosciutto. And as I was flipping through the same book, I had spotted a recipe for a simple tomato melon soup, with crispy prosciutto garnish. So my trio was set.

A couple hours later, I had gone to the store and whipped up a tasty plate of food. Michelle opted for her usual ham and pineapple pizza but I couldn’t resist the opportunity to Iron Chef it up for the night, serving myself three completely different small dishes, with prosciutto as the “secret ingredient.”

The lamb burger was fantastic, as was the pizza slice. Despite the fact that Boar’s Head prosciutto is pretty awful, it still worked well after being cooked in both dishes. (I’d much rather use some authentic Prosciutto de Parma but Publix didn’t have any, as they rarely do.) The soup, unfortunately, was not great. I believe I made it correctly, but it was just too simple a recipe and needed more ingredients/flavor. Two winners, one loser. And I’ll happily have leftover pizza with another lamb burger again tomorrow night.

The prosciutto is visible in the soup as the darker spots on top (crunchy crumbles). On the pizza, it’s the pinker portions peeking out from under the orange cantaloupe (no, that’s not cheese!). And the prosciutto is almost completely hidden on the burger, as it’s wrapped around the meat underneath the lettuce and basil.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 160 – Pizza pizza

Michelle came home with ingredients for homemade pizza tonight. So that’s what we made for dinner. The dough came pre-made from Publix and we each added sauce and mozzarella and fontina cheeses. I had pepperoni and black olives on mine and Michelle had ham and pineapple. Delicious.

Here are the before and after shots:

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 28 – Stereotypes exist because they’re true

Tonight I visited a local Italian restaurant to pick up some food. While waiting, I noticed a perfectly stereotypical Italian family eating there. The family was huge, with multiple generations sitting together. There was a large pile of garlic rolls on the table. Two guys were loudly conversing, throwing a few swear words in here and there, not minding that there were kids at the table. And they all had thick New York accents.

I’m Italian, but I don’t “act” Italian. This group did. But we were in an Italian restaurant, so it all made sense.

I hope they don’t mind me posting a picture of them here.

Pizza Hut to become known as “The Hut”. Lonestar not available for comment.

UPDATE (6/21/09): Pizza Hut is not changing their name.

From pizzahut.com:

“Pizza Hut is not changing its name. We are proud of our name and heritage and will continue to be Pizza Hut. We do use ‘The Hut’ in some of our marketing efforts,” said Brian Niccol, CMO, Pizza Hut, Inc.

“To the loyal fans of Pizza Hut and pizza lovers around the world, we’re happy to tell you that nothing is changing, we’re still Pizza Hut, America’s Favorite Pizza.”

Here’s the previously-posted, but not entirely accurate information…
Stupid news of the day…

From msn.com:

Pizza Hut is reportedly slicing the “pizza” from its name. The fast food chain will now be known simply as “The Hut.”

The chain, which has recently expanded its menu beyond pizza to include pasta, could not immediately be reached for comment Friday. Media and advertising trade publication MediaWeek characterized the name change as an attempt to transform its stores into hip hangouts. There are more than 10,000 Pizza Huts worldwide.

The new “hut” stores will be more than simply places to place a delivery order, according to MediaWeek. They will include televisions that broadcast CBS programs such as “Wheel of Fortune” and “Entertainment Tonight.”

Great. Now I have even more reasons never go to Pizza Hut. Or “The Hut.” Or whatever they’re calling it a week from now. I can stomach their pan pizza and their breadsticks are sometimes good (when they remember to put the seasoning on them), but as an Italian who is quite fond of good, homemade Italian food, I definitely don’t ever want to eat pasta from anywhere called “The Hut.” And I certainly don’t want to do it while watching “Entertainment Tonight.”

Too bad Dom DeLuise isn’t around to reprise his “Pizza the Hutt” role from Spaceballs. It would have made for a great commercial.

FRIDAY FLASHBACK: Little Caesar’s Pizza

Pizza Pizza! If you’re like me, that phrase, quickly uttered by a tiny humanoid dressed in a toga brings back memories of crazy bread and…

Little Caesar’s Pizza

Yes, I realize Little Caesar’s still exists today, but it’s not nearly as easy to find one as it used to be. And when you do, it’s usually in a run-down shopping plaza or remote K-Mart store. To relive the better days of pizza deals and lots and lots of crazy bread, here’s an old Little Caesar’s ad:

And now I will prove my Little Caesar’s fan-ness by showing off two collectible items that I possess:

Click the images to enlarge them.

On the left, you see a Little Caesar’s finger puppet / window hanger, standing (or hanging) at around five inches tall. I had one of these when I was in elementary school, lost it somewhere while growing up, and recently purchased one from a local antique store. I wouldn’t call him an antique but would definitely call him fun.

On the right, you see a Little Caesar’s inflatable pizza. Yes, an inflatable pizza! It’s around 3 feet in diameter and works great as a pool float. The smaller package at the bottom is a second inflatable pizza, not yet unpacked. After all, you can’t have “Pizza Pizza!” without two pizzas!

Both can often be found on eBay.

Do you still visit Little Caesar’s? Do you remember the “Pizza Pizza” character? Comment!
