First photos from Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” film
A first official look has arrived for Tim Burton’s upcoming variation on Alice in Wonderland and it’s just as bizarre as you expect. The photos below were originally published on usatoday.com.
Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Is it me or does Depp look more like actor Elijah Wood here? Regardless, I’m sure his portrayal of the Mad Hatter will be another welcome nutty performance.
Note the flowers with faces flanking both sides of the beautifully-framed still frame. I wonder what (if anything) they’ll sing. With composer Danny Elfman involved, I’m sure it’ll be something hilariously bizarre.
Despite the fact that Tim Burton is making Alice in Wonderland for Disney, this is not the same White Rabbit you know from Disney’s classic version of Alice in Wonderland. In Burton’s world, the rabbit surprisingly takes a more traditional form. This particular frame looks less like a still from a movie and more like an intricate painting. If this is what we can expect from the entire film, we’re definitely in for a visual feast. But then again, what Tim Burton movie isn’t packed with outstandingly unique visuals?
Tweedledee and Tweedledum take a much less traditional form – and a much more Burtonesque one, complete with his trademark black and white stripes.
While Alice is played by real-life 19-year-old actress Mia Wasikowska, many (if not all) of the rest of the characters in the film are a combination of live-action footage and motion-capture.
It seems that this variation of the Alice tale is something of a sequel, placing Alice back in Wonderland 10 years after her first visit, without any memory of ever being there before.

Quirky filmmaker Tim Burton gets a first glimpse of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction, which is based on his 1993 film ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas.’
Burton was accompanied by his partner — actress Helena Bonham Carter — for his first look at the mansion, which undergoes a Christmas makeover each year at the Anaheim, CA theme park.
I would have loved to have the chance to ride Haunted Mansion Holiday with Jack Skellington’s creator. I can only imagine the stories he could tell.
What shocks me is that ET (are they still called Entertainment Tonight or just ET?) reports that this is Burton’s first visit to this holiday version of The Haunted Mansion, inspired by his film The Nightmare Before Christmas. I would have thought he would have seen it by now, as Jack Skellington and friends have been taking over the attraction from Halloween through the end of the year for 7 years.
