Introducing: the new distant creations blog – again!

When I last posted about wanting to once again revive this blog with a few changes, my goal was to get it up and running by the end of the year. Now, here we are on Dec. 31, 2010, the last day of the year, and it’s back!

If you’re still out there and reading after many, many “reboots” of this blog: thank you. This page began as a personal blog, evolved into a daily blog with themed posts, then became a temporary home for my theme park articles until InsideTheMagic.net was launched, and has sat relatively dormant since then. Now it’s time to bring it back to life… again.

This time around, I’m keeping it simple. It begins with the simple new look of the blog, mostly shades of grey, with a bit of orange and blue. The content will also be simple. I have revived the distant creations blog as a place to post whatever is on my mind that I feel should be shared. Unlike the lengthy, well thought-out articles at InsideTheMagic.net, posts here might be as short as a sentence or two. Or, if I’m feeling wordy, I may write a few paragraphs. But there are no restrictions, no themes, and no schedules to adhere to anymore. This is basically returning to where it began years ago as a personal blog for me to share things with anyone interested.

I doubt I’ll post every day. Perhaps there will be weeks where I don’t post at all. But I will post here and there, whenever I have something interesting to say.

So thanks again for checking out the new, new, new distant creations blog. I hope you enjoy it in 2011 and beyond.

The future of the distant creations blog

If you’ve been following Inside the Magic on Twitter, Facebook, or listened to Show 262, then you know that I’ve recently launched an all-new web site for Inside the Magic at http://www.InsideTheMagic.net.

If you didn’t know that already, consider this the announcement. :) Go check it out!

InsideTheMagic.net is now going to be home to all of my Disney and theme park related posts, thoughts, and coverage. That includes podcasts, videos, photos, news, articles, and more.

So where does that leave the distant creations blog?

This blog began as my own personal place to post my thoughts about whatever it is I’m doing at the time. Then it evolved into a place to post lots of news and links to random things around the Internet. Then it became somewhere for me to post videos, photos, and articles from the many theme park events I attend. Now… I’d like to bring it back to where it began.

“Distant Creations” was originally created as nothing more than a portfolio for me to show off my works. But since I rarely (read: never) updated it, it quickly became outdated. That’s when I added the blog with the hopes of posting more often. That notion has come and gone… and come and gone… and come and gone.

But now, while I keep regular business hours at my day job at Lanyard Lab, I need something to occupy my time during slower periods between assisting our customers. So my intention is to post any Disney and theme park-related items to InsideTheMagic.net and anything else I like here.

That means the distant creations blog is once again returning to being my own personal blog. I’ll be writing here and there about the usual topics that interest me, mainly music, movies, collectibles, and technology. But I doubt I’ll post here every day (not that I have ever really done that anyway).

So that’s where I’m going with this blog. I hope you continue to enjoy it. And (one more plug) be sure to head over to InsideTheMagic.net for the most interesting Disney and theme park topics.

Read even more infrequent posts at the Lanyard Lab blog

I previously posted here about my new custom lanyard business, Lanyard Lab. But I failed to specifically mention that I’ve started a new blog over there as well.

Yes, I already only post here once every few days (sometimes weeks or months), but I plan to post there around once a week.

In addition to the occasional sales pitch and general information about new lanyard materials, prices, and other Lanyard Lab information, I also intend on posting news, funny stories, or anything else that that vaguely related to the topic of lanyards. And I emphasize vaguely. The goal is to keep it entertaining but also keep it business-friendly (whatever that means).

For example, my most recent post links the worlds of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, social media, and lanyards. Somehow, they all relate.

Anyway, if you’re looking for a new blog to infrequently read, check out the Lanyard Lab blog.

New color scheme and blog changes.

As a first step in returning to regularly posting here, I have updated the color scheme of the blog (I was never particularly happy with the previous one – though this one may be a bit too blue-heavy).

As a second step in returning to regularly posting here, I have removed the “daily posts” link from the nav bar above. That also means that I’m dumping the idea of themed daily posts. It was fun while it lasted but it was inevitable that I would grow tired of the self-imposed restriction.

Instead, I’m going to make a point of posting something interesting every day when I get up. The topics will likely still be the same as my previous array of daily categories, but they just won’t be limited to the day of the week.

This will be the last official post in the daily categories. In the future, instead of “Wednesday Whine,” I will simply use a new “Whine” category. The same goes for all the others.

I’m sure there will be days when I’m too busy to post anything but I’ll try not to let that happen too often, as there’s almost always something interesting going on in the world that I want to comment about.

In case you’re curious: This blog receives about 12,000 unique visitors a month, so there are definitely plenty of readers out there. It’s down about 9% over the last 30 days so I hope to bring that number back up as I resume posting once again… which will be later today, after I eat lunch.

Until then, comment and let me know if there are any particular topics you enjoy reading my thoughts on.

New Daily Posts

To ensure that I actually post to this blog at least once a day (except on Sundays), I’ve created a schedule of themed posts that I hope you’ll enjoy: Monday Media (also Monday Music and Monday Movie), Tuesday Tech, Wednesday Whine, Thursday Theme Park, Friday Flashback, and Weekend Web.
