But one of the most important parts of that fantastic legacy is our fans. To thank all of our fans, we have created D23 with its one-of-a-kind experiences, special events, collectibles, quarterly publication, Web site, and opportunities to meet others who share the same affection and fascination for Disney. Disney Twenty Three Magazine Reveals Convention and Fan Club Details

The mystery behind Disney’s “Are you 23?” viral question is quickly unraveling leading up to the March 10 reveal date.

At least one Barnes & Noble store has put out the new quarterly “Disney Twenty Three” magazine a few days earlier than they were supposed to and DC blog reader Joseph has sent me the details about it.

A membership to the new D23 fan club includes:

  • A membership card with a personalized charter member certificate with characters drawn by David Pacheco
  • A surprise collectible gift for D23 members from the new Walt Disney Archives collection
  • Exclusive special events and merchandise opportunities
  • Discounted admission to the D23 Expo on 9/10-9/13/09 in Anaheim, CA

That’s right, an official Disney convention for fans will be taking place in or near Disneyland from Sept. 10-13, 2009, one day after the 40th Anniversary event for The Haunted Mansion. Note that being a member of D23 only grants you discounted admission, which means the event will be open to anyone willing to pay to attend.

The new magazine costs $15.95 and comes out four times a year. The premiere issue’s cover contains a photo of Walt Disney looking through the camera and the back cover is black with a quote from Walt that reads, “It seems to me that we have a lot of story yet to tell”.

Articles inside the photo filled 12″x12″ glossy magazine include:

  • The Disney Archives
  • The Anne Liebovitz photo’s article
  • Through Tim Burtons Looking Glass
  • The Suite Story – Disney Gallery & Castle Suite
  • On top of the World – cooking article
  • Finding Pixar
  • UP
  • Sleeping Beauty Reawakens in the castle
  • Writing the Next Chapter- Book article
  • Little Mermaid on Broadway
  • Spirit of 23- About Walt & company history

I just checked my local Barnes & Noble and there was no sign of the magazine yet, as it’s not supposed to be placed on newsstands until March 10 when the official D23 announcement is made at the Disney shareholder’s meeting.

Thanks to Joseph for all of the information!

THURSDAY THEME PARK: D23 / Disney Twenty Three Fan Club Insight

It is all but confirmed that the mysterious “Are you 23?” question Disney has posed for several weeks now refers to a new fan club they are creating. I don’t know why I didn’t think to do this earlier, but it just occurred to me to search the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for “D23″, “Disney 23″, and “Disney Twenty Three” and the results are plentiful…

D23 & Disney Twenty Three Trademark Filings

According to Disney’s USPTO filings, the word mark D23 may be used in conjunction with any of the following products and services (I’ve bolded the most interesting ones – I would have linked directly to the searches and their results but the USPTO web site expires the links a few minutes after they’re created):

Education and entertainment services, namely, providing information in the field of children’s entertainment, theme park service, animated and live-action films and television programs, books, magazines, music and music performers, ice shows, stage productions, consumer products history, history and news concerning the entertainment business; fan club services; providing information via global computer network in the field of entertainment and history;

Looks like more confirmation that it is a fan club with a focus on the history of The Walt Disney Company.

ornamental novelty pins; metal decorative buttons

No surprise that they’ll be producing D23 pins.

Toys, games and playthings; gymnastic and sporting articles (except clothing); hand-held units for playing electronic games; Christmas tree ornaments; snow globes

D23 toys and knick-knacks on the way.

Audio recordings; video recordings; audio and visual recordings in all media; video and computer game cartridges, discs and software; consumer electronics and accessories therefor; eyeglasses and sunglasses and accessories therefor; decorative refrigerator magnets

Quite a range of items here, including video games and any type of audio and video recordings.

Address books; guest books; almanacs; appliqués in the form of decals; stickers; appointment books; baby books; autograph books; children’s activity books; books, printed periodicals, general feature magazines, newsletters, in the field of children’s entertainment, theme parks and resorts, animated and live-action films and television programs, books, magazines, music and music performers, ice shows, stage productions, consumer products history and news concerning the entertainment business; newspapers; comic books; comic strips; coupon books; coloring books; picture books; baseball cards; binders; bookends; bookmarks; bumper stickers; calendars; cartoon strips; Christmas cards; chalk; coasters made of paper; coin albums; decals; decorative paper centerpieces; diaries; disposable diapers for babies; drawing rulers; envelopes; flash cards; gift cards; gift wrapping paper; globes; greeting cards; maps; memo pads; modeling clay; note paper; blank paper notebooks; notebook paper; writing paper; paintings; paper flags; paper party favors; paper cake decorations; paper party decorations; paper napkins; paper party bags; paperweights; paper gift wrap bows; paper pennants; paper place mats; paper table cloths; pen or pencil holders; pencils; ball point pens; pencil sharpeners; erasers; felt pens; pen and pencil cases and boxes; pens; color pencils; writing implements; photograph albums; photographs; photo-engravings; pictorial prints; art prints; arts and craft paint kits; plastic shopping bags; portraits; postcards; posters; printed awards; printed certificates; printed invitations; printed menus; recipe books; rubber stamps; score cards; stamp albums; stationery; staplers; trading cards; ungraduated rulers

Now THAT’s a big list. Of course, it doesn’t mean that there will be D23-branded versions of all of these items, but clearly Disney isn’t ruling out the possibility of including the new Disney 23 brand on anything. Of particular interest to me is the listing of periodicals (a new magazine perhaps?). And this section also mentions theme parks and resorts, which keeps open the possibility of some kind of exclusive area of Walt Disney World or Disneyland open only to D23 members.

Housewares, namely, bowls, brooms, cake pans, cake molds, cake servers, candle holders not of precious metal, candle snuffers, cookie cutters, cork screws, cups, decorating bags for confectioners, decorative crystal prisms, decorative glass not for building, decorative plates, dishes; flower pots; coasters not of paper and not being table linen; removable insulators for drink cans and bottles; lunch kits consisting of lunch boxes and insulated containers; hair brushes and hair combs; toothbrushes; plastic cups; cookie jars; paper cups; paper plates; figurines made of china, crystal, earthenware, glass, ceramics, and porcelain; dinnerware; beverageware; beverage glassware; wastepaper baskets; mugs; trays

Another massive list, but this time more focused. I could see exclusive D23 fan club housewares selling like proverbial Mickey-shaped hot cakes.

beachwear; belts; bottoms; chaps; cloth bibs; coats; cover-ups; dresses; ear muffs; footwear; gloves; Halloween costumes; headwear; hosiery; infantwear; jackets; leotards; lingerie; loungewear; mittens; overalls; pants; ponchos; rainwear; scarves; shirts; shorts; sleepwear; socks; sweaters; sweatshirts; swimwear; ties; tops; underwear; wrist bands

And clothing, of course! What Disney fan club would be complete without a wide variety of exclusive apparel.

So will you join the D23 / Disney Twenty Three fan club? If so, will you gobble up D23-branded merchandise? Comment!

D23 / “Are You 23?” Revealed…?

I previously blogged about Disney’s mysterious Are you 23? question that has been asked on a web site and various print materials.

It has since been revealed that the answer to the mystery would be delivered during the upcoming annual shareholder’s meeting for The Walt Disney Co. on March 10, but it looks like the information may be leaking early.

From The Disney Blog:

We still don’t have many details about what D23 will offer. Rumors include an enrollment fee, a yearly convention, exclusive merchandise, and an online community. We’ll see shortly, I guess. All the details will be revealed on March 10th.

(Pictures from WDW News Today)

Many curious Disney fans have guessed that D23 will be some kind of club that can be joined that gains members access to merchandise or exclusive Disney-related happenings and it appears that it might be the case. This certainly makes sense given the posed question, “Are You 23?”, asking, in a sense, if one is a member of the club. 1923 is the year of the founding of The Walt Disney Company.

Dave Smith, head of the Disney Archive, recently revealed (through the Mickey Monitor, Walt Disney World’s Annual Passholder newsletter) that the Archive has had a hand in whatever it is.

Are you 23? – Disney’s Mysterious “D23″ Web Site & Countdown

Disney has launched a new cryptic Web site at disney.com/23 promoting… something.

Visitors to the site are greeted with a brief message reading:

Are you 23?

Find out March 10

Tinker Bell then flies in and changes the screen to a countdown to March 10, 2009.

Is it a movie? Probably. LaughingPlace.com has posted a photo of this poster spotted at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, CA.

Any guesses as to what this might be?

UPDATE (2/24/09): More information about the mystery question here.

UPDATE (3/5/09): Looks like Disney couldn’t keep the secret until March 10. Information about the D23 fan club, convention, and magazine here.
