Johnny Depp has once again experimented with his good looks and has turned ghoulish to fit in the character of ‘Mad Hatter’ in the upcoming film ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

The actor will be seen sporting a quirky hat with red curly hair sticking out besides donning a ghostly pallor and bohemian Victorian clothes, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.

Depp is unrecognisable in his latest role, the paper said.

The 45-year-old actor would play a darker version of the tea-drinking hat maker in Tim Burton’s upcoming remake of the Lewis Carroll’s classic book. Read the rest of this entry »

Disney continuing to expand into upper end and non character lines

From screenindia.com:

The most expensive piece of clothing sold by the Walt Disney Company six years ago was a $75 sweatshirt embossed with a mug shot of Mickey Mouse. By Magic Kingdom decree, home furnishings were required to exhibit at least one Disney character, leading to children’s play rugs ($65, in Pluto) and nightlights ($9.95, in Winnie the Pooh). Disney still peddles all those things. But now the company also sells $3,900 designer wedding gowns — no characters in sight — and women’s cashmere sweaters “inspired by Tinker Bell.” Interior design offerings include $2,800 leather club chairs and $6,000 chandeliers patterned after the Art Deco decor in Walt Disney’s office. One of the company’s new products: couture soap.

Welcome to Disney, the “lifestyle brand.”

Shoppers may be surprised to learn that these pricey and Mickey-free products are from the same company that foisted Hannah Montana on the world and turned singing Chihuahuas into a cultural touchstone. While some of the items have recognisable characters on them, others contain only winks and nods to the company’s animated movies and theme park rides. And sometimes the only hint of Disney’s involvement is on the label. Read the rest of this entry »

Disneyland pulls out of French GP race

From grandprix.com:

The company Lagardere Sports and Disneyland Paris have abandoned their project to hold the French Grand Prix, saying that the event is not economically viable. The plan was for a race in 2010 but it seems that the local government was not willing to come up with the funding because of fears that the local population would object to the event. This means that there is not going to be a French Grand Prix in either 2009 or 2010.

The project was headed by former world champion Alain Prost and was one of the six that were in competition for the event. The deal was for Lagardere to come up with around $80m in finance with Disney providing the land.

The latest rumours suggest that the project that will now become the favourite is the one in departement of the Yvelines, to the west of Paris, in the valley of the River Seine, at Flins. This is understood to have the support of French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

Cody Linley won’t be graduating “Dancing with the Stars.” The 18-year-old “Hannah Montana” actor and his professional partner, Julianne Hough, were eliminated Tuesday from ABC’s popular dancing competition.

The pair received a total score of 46 out of 60 from judges for their paso doble and salsa routines Monday. After viewer votes were combined with the judges’ scores, the Disney actor was dismissed.

“Oh my gosh,” a choked-up Linley said after his ouster. “I mean, words can’t even explain the true amazing, growing, learning journey that I’ve had on this show. I can’t show my appreciation anymore to Julianne. I can’t say thank you. I love her so much. This opportunity has been so amazing.” Read the rest of this entry »

McQuarrie Uncovers Florence “Monster”

From darkhorizons.com:

“The Usual Suspects” and “Valkyrie” scribe Christopher McQuarrie will write and produce two project - “The Champions” and “The Monster of Florence” for United Artists.

Douglas Preston, who co-writes the popular Pendergast novels such as “The Cabinet of Curiosities” and the previously adapted “Relic”, authored the 2006 non-fiction New York Times Best-seller ‘Monster’ which concerns a true series of incredible events in the author’s life.

Shortly after moving his family to Italy in 2000, Preston learned that an olive grove on their property had been the scene of a brutal murder. Teaming with Italian journalist Mario Spezi, Preston began investigating the crime, which was part of a series of eight double homicides between 1968-1985.

The pair became embroiled in a web of intrigue that grew all the more sinister when they themselves were implicated by the authorities for the slayings.

In a press release issued by the studio, McQuarrie says his adaptation will deal more with the writers uncovering and becoming a part of this grim story than focusing on the serial killer himself.

Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen (”American Beauty,” “Milk”) will produce.
