WEEKEND WEB: Relive Classic x86 Fun with DOSBox

Have an urge to play Commander Keen? How about The 7th Guest? Maybe some Maniac Mansion? Then look no further than…

DOSBox

You can turn your computer into a classic DOS machine, regardless of whether you’re running Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, OS/2, or just about any other operating system. Just head to dosbox.com, download the appropriate version, and you’ll be in the world of DOS in seconds.

It looks and acts just like DOS but runs in a handy little window on your computer, allowing you to relive what it was like to use a computer 15-20 years ago.

There’s a wealth of “abandonware” DOS games online (software that hasn’t been supported by its creator in many years). You can find a few here, here, and here.

I used to live in DOS games like The Secret of Monkey Island and am thrilled to be able to fire them up again without having to drag my old 486 out of the closet and hope it actually runs.

WEEKEND WEB: e-Rewards Means Free Video Games and More

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of web sites out there that ask visitors to fill out a survey in exchange for being entered into a drawing to win something for free. Unfortunately, there’s usually only one or, at most, a handful of winners for the thousands of entries that are received. There is one site that I know of that consistently provides an easy way to get free stuff for very little work…

e-Rewards Means Free Video Games and More

I have been filling out surveys from e-Rewards for many months now and as a result have received a number of free $25 gift cards to GameStop. This is just one of many rewards available for earning points from filling out surveys.

Once you sign up, the service will send you an e-mail whenever a new survey is available for you. Survey topics include just about anything, from cars to food to banks. Each survey has an assigned e-Rewards dollar value for completing it. You can then cash in your e-Rewards dollars at any time for gift cards, frequent flier miles, or a number of other goodies. I always choose the GameStop gift cards as they enable me to essentially get video games for free.

Sometimes the surveys take just a few seconds to complete and are worth just a dollar or two, while other surveys take 30 minutes and are worth several dollars. Every little bit adds up to just a small amount of work in exchange for free stuff.

So sign up now! Free stuff is good!

WEEKEND WEB: The Collection of Michael Jackson Up for Auction

The former King of Pop is having hundreds of items from his personal collections auctioned off by Julien’s Auctions. There are so many items being sold that Julien’s has separated the collections into categories:

  • Session I: Garden Statuary and Outdoor Furniture
  • Session II: Furniture and Decorative Arts
  • Session III: Furniture and Decorative Arts
  • Session IV: Antiques, Paintings and Fine Decorative Art
  • Session V: Amusements, Arcade Games and Disneyana
  • Session VI: Amusements, Arcade Games and Disneyana
  • Session VII: Memorabilia From the Life and Career of Michael Jackson
  • Session VIII: Memorabilia From the Life and Career of Michael Jackson

Most of the items up for auction are available to preview here, with some coming online soon.

Items include numerous arcade game machines, limos, clothing, original gloves worn by Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands, and custom Disney sculptures created for Jackson’s home, amongst many others.

Casually browsing through all of the available items will take at least an hour, so it makes for a great Weekend Web entry to keep you occupied (even if I’m actually posting this on Monday… yes, another late post.)

Check it all out at Julien’s Auctions.

WEEKEND WEB: American Idol Experience Madness

As much as I try to avoid posting about the same topic more than once in a short time period, I can’t resist posting a link round-up for all of the American Idol Experience content that I’ve posted over the last few days.

Since Thursday’s world premiere of the attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I’ve done almost nothing but edit, compress, and upload video from the event and now that it’s all done, I want to make sure that everyone who wants to see it has a chance to. So here are a bunch of American Idol links:

WEEKEND WEB: Action-Figure.com

This week’s web link is for all you collectors out there. My favorite spot for getting all of the latest action figure, figurine, and sculpture news is…

Action-Figure.com

I’m sure this site is familiar to many of you, but for those of you who haven’t visited it, head to action-figure.com now. The site is updated several times a day with all of the latest news and pictures of new and upcoming collectible releases.

My favorite feature of this site are its RSS feed, which allows you to easily grab all the latest from the world of action figures in whatever news reader you like to use. I use Netvibes.

My other favorite feature surrounds action-figure.com’s excellent photo coverage of every comic con and toy show that exists.  Currently, they’re covering the New York Comic Con.

Do you have a favorite collectible news site? Post it in the comments!
