365 Adventures in 2011: Day 126 – May 20 is going to be a fun day

Today was a busy work day, but two items kept me thinking of some of the many fun things coming up in the next couple weeks. During the day, the Summer 2011 issue of the Mickey Monitor showed up in the mail, previewing Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, which opens May 20 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I’ll definitely be there for that. Then, after work was all done, Michelle and I played my review copy of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean. I’m not allowed to post my thoughts on the game until its official release date on May 10, but it did keep me thinking of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” which also opens on May 20. Blackbeard (from the new film) will be added to the Pirates ride at the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland on May 20 as well. It’s going to be a busy (but fun) day!

Oh, and I got an extra copy of the LEGO Pirates game to give away too. Click here to enter the contest.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 106 – Toy Story Mania high score

During a short trip to Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Michelle, I got my best score ever on Toy Story Mania – somewhere around 216,000. It was the highest score of the hour! My virtual prize was a cat. And I was happy.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 97 – Hadouken… in 3D!

I don’t have a lot of free time. I like to keep myself busy. But lately I’ve made time to enjoy my new Nintendo 3DS, which I love. I wasn’t planning on purchasing any of the launch titles, but after I rented Street Fighter IV 3D from GameFly, I had to keep it. Even though I own Street Fighter IV already on XBox 360, it’s so much fun to play on the awesome glasses-free 3D screen. Plus, the touch screen has four virtual buttons that can be programmed for special moves and combos. It’s a bit like cheating, but it’s also great fun to send out Hadouken after Hadouken with little to no effort. And, like most new 3D releases, the game came with a fun lenticular 3D card on the box cover, seen below.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 87 – Nintendo 3DS is quite amazing

A dimension of sight… a dimension of sound… a dimension of mind. Oh wait, that’s the Twilight Zone. This is the Nintendo 3DS and I’m having a lot of fun with it. The built-in games are amusing but the best part is the 3D camera and screen, which work far better than I ever could have imagined. It’s like nothing I’ve owned before. And I don’t even own any games for it yet! (Though I did play Madden 3D, which GameFly sent as my first 3DS rental. Not a great game. 3D is kind of gimmicky. I look forward to receiving Street Fighter IV 3D next.)

But the 3DS is one sleek looking video game machine. It doesn’t look or feel like a toy, as previous incarnations of the DS did. I can see many more adults having fun with this iteration and I would have LOVED to have this thing when I was a kid, back when I was stuck playing the original black-and-white Gameboy with no backlight. Can’t wait to see what a Mario game looks like on the 3DS.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 84 – Nintendo 3DS preview

I thought I wouldn’t get a chance to try a new Nintendo 3DS until I picked mine up tomorrow night at midnight, but Best Buy has a demo already set up – and it’s great! I wasn’t going to buy any launch games for it, but playing Pilotwings Resort made me want it. Sure it’s a rather gimmicky game that I’ll probably get tired of eventually, but it may be the only launch title that I actually want. Street Fighter IV is tempting, but I already have it for XBox 360 (and love it). But I am looking forward to playing around with the 3D camera and built-in functions until a better set of games comes along.
