MONDAY MUSIC: MC Hammer concert at Universal Studios Mardi Gras – Review, Video, and Photos

(This is a repost from the Orlando Attractions Magazine blog)

Saturday night, April 4, 2009, I attended the MC Hammer show at Universal Studios’ Mardi Gras as my very first Mardi Gras concert experience. After hearing the horror stories of the massive crowds that showed up for Kelly Clarkson’s show last week, I was worried that I’d end up too far away from the stage to even see Hammer perform. Fortunately, it appears that MC Hammer isn’t nearly as popular as Kelly Clarkson, though I’d personally rather listen to ‘U Can’t Touch This’ ten times in a row than hear ‘Since U Been Gone’ even once.

When I arrived at the Universal Studios concert area at a little before 8p.m., here’s what the scene looked like:

Universal Studios Mardi Gras stage

There was plenty of room to walk around, sit on the fake grass, or stand near the stage and wait for the concer to begin. As night fell, the crowd began to get larger, with nearly everyone standing and inching closer to the stage by around 8:30p.m.

The Mardi Gras parade music began playing over the stage loudspeakers at 9:00p.m., though we couldn’t actually see the parade until 9:30p.m. After that passed by, a couple of Mardi Gras people came out on stage and threw beads into the crowd for 15 minutes or so. Finally, around 10:00p.m., it was time for MC Hammer to come out.

The atmosphere of this concert was very casual. Hammer casually strolled on stage with no introduction or theatrics. Once the DJ hit play on a backing track on his laptop, the show began and Hammer, along with a ton of background dancers, blazed through three or four songs that I didn’t recognize. Even so, it was a blast to see MC Hammer in person, dancing up a storm. He seemed very laid back and simply wanted to have fun with the performance. After all, it was in a theme park -- no need to take it too seriously! He was performing for park guests of all ages, which is not likely his typical audience.

Between songs, MC Hammer and the dancers walked around (or off) stage, resetting for the next track. Occasionally Hammer talked to the crowd, either introducing an upcoming song or saying how excited he was to be in Orlando. But at that point everyone close to the stage (includying myself) had been standing there for 2+ hours and were itching for some hit songs that we would actually recognize.

In that regard, Hammer did not disappoint. Ultimately his set list included “2 Legit 2 Quit”, “Pray”, “Pumps and a Bump”, and even “Addams Groove” from The Addams Family film soundtrack (a song I had forgotten ever existed but was happy to hear it live).

Before “Addams Groove,” Hammer introduced his son along with a large group of teenage dancers who pop-and-lock’ed through the entire song while Hammer took a spot in the background rapping the song’s lyrics.

But the song everyone wanted to hear is the one that MC Hammer is most famous for recording: “U Can’t Touch This.” At around 10:50p.m., the show came to a halt when Hammer came down off of the stage and headed toward the audience. He began personally selecting audience members, pulling them over barracades and telling them to walk up near the stage. After nearly ten minutes of silence and confusion by most of the audience, all of those selected (there must have been at least 100 people) were told to head up onto the stage:

Finally, Hammer joined them up on stage and made sure they all knew exactly what was about to happen by simply facing the on-stage crowd and uttering “My my my…” into the microphone, the opening words to “U Can’t Touch This.” The group began rapping back to him the first few lyrics, ensuring to him that they were ready.

What came next was a hilariously bizarre performance of “U Can’t Touch This,” which I bring you here for your viewing enjoyment:

This was definitely the highlight of the night, especially with the Hammer dance-offs / instructionals throughout the song. I’m quite jealous that I wasn’t in the right spot to get pulled up on stage.

Overall, this was one of the least serious concert experiences I have ever been to, but that’s what made it great fun. MC Hammer and his crew were clearly there to have a good time and involve a theme park audience in the performance. I’ve read some comments about this show that complained that it was unorganized, that Hammer wasn’t actually rapping, and that the recent Barenaked Ladies show at Universal Mardi Gras was much better. I have to disagree. This experience was all about seeing MC Hammer live and in person and nothing more. I grew up listening to Hammer’s music and to see him perform his hits live and Hammer-dance around the stage was something I thought I’d never get to do. I also listened to bits of the Barenaked Ladies show at Universal (they released an audio recording of it on their web site) and I thought they sounded like a bunch of amateur comedians rather than a band -- I’d rather see MC Hammer any day.

It was definitely Hammer Time in Orlando last night and I’m happy to say that I was there to witness it.

Listen to the very end Show #209 of Inside the Magic to hear a binaural recordings of two songs from the concert.

Here are a couple more photos I took at the concert:

THURSDAY THEME PARK: Ticket Kiosks in Hotels

While recently delivering some free promotional copies of Orlando Attractions Magazine to hotels on International Drive, I noticed that several of the hotels featured a handy new feature in the lobbies in the form of…

Ticket Kiosks in Hotels

These kiosks exclusively sold tickets to Universal Orlando and have appeared some time within the last 2 months or so:

As you can see, each kiosk is hard to miss, both because of its brightly-glowing screens and colorful standee of The Simpsons that was stationed near each one. The interface on the kiosks appears to be a retooled version of Universal’s web page. It allows the instant purchase of admission tickets to Universal Orlando’s two theme parks using a credit card. No lines, no wait. If you’re staying at one of these hotels, just head to the lobby, swipe your card, and you’re off to enjoy a fun day at the theme parks.

Both Disney and Universal have had self-service ticket kiosks available at select locations near their regular ticket booths but this is the first time I’ve seen any in a hotel. I think they’re a great idea and would love to see more showing up throughout all the tourist areas of Orlando.

THURSDAY THEME PARK: Twittering the Theme Parks

Theme parks offer an escape from reality, allowing visitors to forget their troubles for a while and just have fun. Often, the Internet can offer the same type of escape, so it’s no wonder there is a plethora of theme park-related content online. But visiting a Web site or watching a video featuring something from a theme park just isn’t the same as enjoying time spent in one with friends and family. Now, it appears that the Internet has an answer to that too,  where anyone sitting online at a computer can share the comfort of escaping from the real world for a while by following those who are…

Twittering About Theme Parks

Twitter, for those of you who don’t know, is a service on which registered users can easily and quickly post small messages/updates about what they’re doing, where they are, what they’re thinking about, or really anything they want. Other users can then follow those whom they find interesting to read everything they post. It’s like a blog, but much smaller (each post has to be 140 characters or less). (You can follow me here).

One of the most fun elements of Twitter is its search feature, allowing visitors to search for tweets (that’s what posts on Twitter are called) by entering in any key words or phrases. So in thinking about the combination of theme parks and Twitter, I thought it would be fun to see what came up if I searched for popular park names and attractions. Below are some of the more interesting results, along with my comments about them:

TWITTER SEARCH: “Disney World”

It’s definitely not uncommon for celebrities to take PR photos while visiting Walt Disney World, so I’m not surprised this came up after Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes visited on Valentine’s Day with their family.

  • KelDaMc: is thinking that she might take Disney World up on their offer and go for free on her birthday. Anybody in? I have never been.

Disney’s current promotion to allow guests in for free on their birthdays is clearly getting people interested.

  • Joel_P_Reynolds: I ask my son if he would help me with the recycling today…he said “yes…then we will go to Chuck-E-Cheese and Disney World!” awesome day!

Disney World and Chuck-E-Cheese lumped into the same category in the mind of a child. I love it.

  • mariethebee: Dreamt I was in line for a Left4Dead-themed ride at Disney World. I totally punched some girl in the face. No cuts.

It’s good to see I’m not the only one who dreams about fictitious Disney rides, though I never dreamt about one involving Left4Dead.

TWITTER SEARCH: “Disneyland”

This “something > something else” style of comparison is very common on Twitter. It’s an easy way to express an opinion without filling up the 140 character limit. Of course, in this case, the comparison is a difficult one to make, as Walt Disney World is such a different place than Disneyland.

  • JonStrickland: I’m kicking myself. I forgot that I could have met ASIMO at Disneyland. The demo was great though.

Here’s a great example of learning something about a theme park through Twitter. I knew that ASIMO had a home in Innoventions at Disneyland, but I didn’t know you could “meet” him there.

  • RFMaston: going to disneyland today. i heard they changed ‘it’s a small world’ to be less ethnic. that would be a shame.

And here’s an example of not-quite-accurate information on Twitter. Disney characters were added to the attraction recently, but I don’t think that makes it “less ethnic.”

TWITTER SEARCH: “Universal Studios”

  • gamoid: i had a dream that universal studios built a watchmen theme park

Another dream for a different theme park!

  • benatargiraldo: Getting ready for the first show of the year in Orlando at Universal Studios on Feb 28th

A handful of celebrities use Twitter as well. Here Pat Benatar plugs her upcoming concert that’s part of Universal’s Mardi Gras celebration.

  • Nymo: I’ll never forgive Universal/Viacom for removing the Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios Orlando. Always wanted to go, but never did =(

There’s certainly no shortage of opinions on Twitter and I agree wholeheartedly with this one. As fun as the Blue Man Group show is, I wish Nickelodeon Studios was still around (and still taping great kid-friendly game shows).

  • IllegibleMe: Just bought my third copy of Back to the Future – I need that Universal Studios Ride footage!

I previously blogged about this, so it’s good to see that others share my excitement!

Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR’s most popular driver, will unveil his No. 88 National Guard/AMP Energy Chevrolet at CityWalk’s plaza stage from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday in front of a crowd of National Guardsmen and Universal Orlando guests.

Those in attendance will get to see Earnhardt live on stage with a replica of the car he will drive during the 2009 season. Select fans will have the opportunity to ask him questions and all fans can enter to win one of five autographed items.

More than 300 members and potential recruits from the Florida National Guard will also be in attendance, some in full dress uniform. At the conclusion of the unveil ceremony, guardsmen will roll the replica vehicle through CityWalk to the front of NASCAR Sports Grille, where it will be set permanently. The event is free and open to the public.

Universal Orlando Resort partnered with NASCAR Sports Grille and the National Guard to host Dale Earnhardt Jr. and showcase his car, which will make its season debut on Feb. 7 during the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway.
