365 Adventures in 2011: Day 54 – Hangin’ with Bill Nye the Science Guy
When I found out Bill Nye the Science Guy was going to be appearing at Walt Disney World, there was no question that I had to go see him. I’ve been a fan of his since his TV show debuted in the early ’90s. I watched Mr. Wizard in elementary school, then Bill Nye in middle school. I wonder if there’s a “science guy” on TV today.
Nye was at Epcot today, giving presentations in Innoventions for National Engineers Week (video/photos from his first presentation here). Afterward, he signed autographs for fans. I think more people around my age showed up to see him than young kids! He didn’t have time to take pictures, but I did get a quick photo with him while he signed my Innoventions map:
(Thanks to Banks Lee for taking the picture! I think I was still pulling my arm back from quickly handing him the camera, hence my somewhat awkward pose…)
Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill! Science rules.
Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 49 – Just call me Snuffleupagus
While at Busch Gardens yesterday covering Cheetah Hunt construction, I finally had a chance to visit the relatively new Sesame Street Safari of Fun section of the park. It opened last year but this was my first time making it there to check it out.
As a long-time Sesame Street fan (who isn’t?), I was thrilled to get my picture with none other than Big Bird!
I was always partial to Snuffleupagus, but the big yellow fellow would do. The area looks like a blast for children, but I was disappointed to see that all the rides were for kids only. I really wanted to ride the water hippos.
If you’re interested in seeing more, I’ll likely post some pictures and video from the area soon over at InsideTheMagic.net.
And yes, this photo was taken yesterday so it’s kind of cheating on this daily photo thing. But I don’t care. Deal with it.
Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 46 – Mary’s Valentine’s Party Mystery Box
Every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night, my bedtime TV viewing is fixed on the Cutlery Corner Network aka The Knife Show. While I have absolutely no interest in collecting knives nor am I a hunter or a redneck, I still find this home shopping program to be entirely amusing and often hilarious.
The southern-accented hosts spend hours on each of those nights getting excited about extremely low prices on mass quantities of knives. The regular knife-selling isn’t all that interesting, but it’s the appearances by the program’s personalities that make it all worth watching.
In particular, it’s always entertaining when Jim Frost, the owner of Frost Cutlery, makes an appearance with his “little buddy” Mary, who I believe works there boxing up knives to ship out to customers. Evidently Mary’s time on TV has become so popular that Cutlery Corner has even released special pink knives with engraved versions of her face of them. She also occasionally has her own “mystery box” offer, where customers plunk down cash without knowing exactly what knife they’ll be getting.
And today, the day after Valentine’s Day and many months into regularly subjecting my wife to Cutlery Corner viewings, I received a surprise in the mail. Michelle purchased Mary’s Valentine’s Day Mystery Box for me.
I have no idea what I’m going to do with these knives, but they sure are hilarious.
I should also mention that as a joke, I had put one of the Mary knives in Michelle’s Christmas stocking. She has no idea what she’ll do with hers either, but now we have a set of them.
Make sure to tune in to the Cutlery Corner network. It’s on several channels on DirecTV and cable on the nights listed above. Check your local listings.
Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 27 – It’s a Mad Men world
After hearing so very much about how amazing of a show AMC’s Mad Men is supposed to be, I picked up the first three seasons, unseen, on Blu-ray for a good price on Black Friday. Now, a couple months later, Michelle and I are finally getting around to watching them. After 4 episodes, I’m undecided as to how much I like the show.
The characters are interesting and it’s entertaining to watch them develop, but I haven’t quite been drawn in as much as the hype would have led me to believe I’d be. I don’t see the fascination with it quite yet. I’ll keep watching, mainly because I bought the discs, but I’m not sure I would still be if it was just another TV show.
TweetThunder, Thunder, Thundercats, REBOOOOOT! – Warner Brothers debuts image from new anime-style series
Remakes are more miss than hit, but judging from two new anime-style Thundercats cartoon images hitting the ‘net today, I think Warner Brothers could have a winner on their hands here – as long as it’s not TOO anime.
And they’ve certainly given the familiar ’80s characters a makeover.
Panthro looks more or less the same, though a bit more contemporary. But Lion-O looks far younger and more agile, Tygra apparently is now a G.I. Joe (Did Thundercats ever have guns?), and Cheetara – well, she has a bigger female presence than ever.
But I kinda like it. At least the Sword of Omens still looks identical, as does the iconic logo.
