From signonsandiego.com:
SeaWorld in San Diego may become the first business in the United States to obtain a pollution discharge permit for exploding fireworks over a body of water
The staff of the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, a state agency charged with enforcing the federal Clean Water Act, is recommending the first-of-its-kind permit to ensure no harm is occurring to Mission Bay. The boards directors will consider adopting the permit after a public hearing set for Dec. 12.
The proposed permit would apply only to SeaWorld, which has staged thousands of fireworks shows over the bays southeastern quadrant since 1984. Other fireworks displays, such as those sponsored by cities and nonprofit groups for July 4th, would not be affected. Read the rest of this entry »

From yahoo.com:
SeaWorld spokesman Fran Stephenson says Taku tah-KU, a 14-year-old male killer whale, died Wednesday night. Taku had been showing signs of infection for the three days before his death, but he was responding to treatment, Stephenson said.
A cause of death has not been determined. Results of an examination will be available in six weeks.
Stephenson said there is a wide disparity on estimates for the life expectancy of killer whales.

SeaWorld Orlando is joining the list of theme parks holding holiday events, with its Halloween Spooktacular on October weekends.
Halloween Spooktacular will be Oct. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 and 31 and is included in park admission. The event begins each day at 11 a.m.
Costumed youngsters can trick-or-treat among sea witches, octopuses, mermaids and pumpkin fish. A featured character in the events will be Sesame Street’s The Count, who will have character breakfasts.
Some of the highlights include concerts for preschoolers during event weekends at Bayside Stadium; safe trick-or-treating, with maps to 15 candy treasure stations at the park; and Spooktacular celebrations that break out in the area, with an ice witch, roller-skating break dancers and a disc jockey hosting interactive games and activities. From orlandosentinel.com:

Record attendance at SeaWorld Orlando this summer has come with what officials there say are record customer-service marks despite the thick crowds — thanks in part to lessons learned from the theme park’s rich little sister park, Discovery Cove.
During the past two years, SeaWorld officials say, they have dramatically ramped up customer-service programs. Additions include a dozen roving guest-service ambassadors, satellite customer-service centers deep inside the park, and sidewalk animal exhibits to entertain people waiting in lines.
The marine-life theme park also overhauled its signature dolphin and whale shows and made other attractions changes. Yet SeaWorld General Manager Jim Atchison insists the more comprehensive push has been in guest services, and that is showing up in the park’s strongest survey results yet.
“Our guests are responding positively, and we’re busier than we’ve ever been,” Atchison said. “Having a great product is of no good if people have a bad experience.”

From iht.com:
Last year, someone edited the Wikipedia entry for the Sea World theme parks to change all mentions of “orcas” to “killer whales,” insisting that this was a more accurate name for the species.
There was another, unexplained edit: A paragraph about criticism of Sea World’s “lack of respect toward its orcas” disappeared.
Both changes, it turns out, originated at a computer at Anheuser-Busch, Sea World’s owner.
Dozens of similar examples of insider editing came to light last week through WikiScanner, a new Web site that traces the source of millions of changes to Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

From orlandosentinel.com:

Located right next door to SeaWorld Adventure Park, Discovery Cove is not your ordinary Orlando theme park. There are no tickets, no rides of which to speak, and no larger-than-life characters signing autographs and posing for photos.
What Discovery Cove does offer is the once in a lifetime experience to swim amongst dolphins, snorkel through a colorful lagoon filled with thousands of tropical fish, and relax among hundreds of free-flying tropical birds.
Instead of using tickets, Discovery Cove works on a reservation system. Just call the toll-free number and tell them how many people are in your party and what day you want to come. The park only admits up to 1000 guests per day, making it easy to maintain the laid back atmosphere at the center of the parks philosophy. Read the rest of this entry »
