From orlandosentinel.com:

Strong progress is being marked for SeaWorld Orlando’s next big roller coaster, the Manta, which is being built near the the entrance of the park, shown in first photo, at left, taken by the Sentinel late last week from SeaWorld’s Sky Tower.
Manta is set to open next summer, as a steel roller coaster that mixes a “gliding” experience like a manta ray with live marine life exhibits. The coaster will have a maximum height of 140 feet, a maximum speed of 56 mph and a maximum drop of 113 feet. The ride features cars in which people will ride horizontally, face-down, four across.
The exhibit portion of the attraction will feature 10 aquariums holding 184,000 gallons of water and 3,000 animals. There will be more than 60 species on display, including 304 rays, 23 sea dragons and 20 sea horses.

From orlandosentinel.com:
Weekend press reports out of Great Britain continue to name Parques Reunidos and Merlin Entertainments as prime bidders — and now add uncited chatter naming Walt Disney Parks and Resorts — to buy SeaWorld Orlando and all the other Orlando-based Busch Entertainment Corp. theme parks.
The Mail on Sunday, a British tabloid, brought up the Disney name yesterday, offering no details or sources to suggest that Disney would be a bidder to buy Busch Entertainment from Anheuser-Busch Cos., as the big St. Louis-based brewer sheds non-beer businesses to complete the merger with InBev, the Belgian/Brazilian brewer.
Meanwhile, The Sunday Times of London reported yesterday that a serious play is being prepared by the owner of Parques Reunidos, which owns dozens of European theme parks and attractions, including some marine parks that are similar in concept to SeaWorld, plus a few smaller attractions in the United States, including Wild Waters and Silver Springs near Ocala. The Times reported that companys financial backer has hired investment bankers including Morgan Stanley to discuss a possible $4.5 billion bid for Busch Entertainment. Read the rest of this entry »

From orlandosentinel.com:
(The only reason I posted this was because it is such an obvious attempt at making a story more newsworthy by slamming a theme park — would they put “Target employee arrested…”? I mean, come on, it happened in his home. Was it stupid? Yes. Was it really anything to do with Sea World? No. - Dr. Disney)
A 53-year-old SeaWorld employee was arrested Friday in connection with a shooting that endangered a teenager, Polk County Sheriff’s deputies said Sunday.
Deputies said they arrested Orville Lee Wollard III of Davenport for firing a gun at a 17-year-old as he physically restrained a 16-year-old. Wollard was charged with shooting a deadly missile within an occupied dwelling, child abuse without great harm and assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. Read the rest of this entry »

From signonsandiego.com:
Actor Mark Wahlberg fed a rescued California sea lion pup during a visit to SeaWorld San Diego this week.
The female pup was rescued by SeaWorld employees on July 1 along the San Diego coast after it was apparently abandoned by its mother.
The Oscar-nominated actor took a tour of SeaWorld’s animal-rescue center during his visit to the marine-life park Tuesday.
SeaWorld San Diego is a member of the California Marine Mammal Stranding Network, under the direction of the National Marine Fisheries Service. Each year, the park rescues about 200 ill and injured marine mammals from beaches in San Diego County, said spokeswoman Kelly Terry.
During the last 40 years, SeaWorld has rescued more than 4,000 marine animals.

From stltoday.com:
Beer isnt the only product that bears the Anheuser-Busch Cos. name. But unlike their frothy friend, those other operations — including Busch Gardens — might not wear InBevs moniker should a deal with the Belgian brewer happen.
For weeks, analysts have speculated that InBev would sell off A-Bs packaging subsidiaries and its entertainment division. Now, as reports surface that InBev upped its offer to $70 a share, the analysts say theres even more pressure to strip out these operations and recoup money.
“While its too early in this process for InBev to have made decisions about all aspects of A-Bs operations,” InBev understands the theme parks contributions to the areas where they operate and will try to help preserve that role, spokeswoman Marianne Amssoms said.
Anheuser-Buschs noncore assets, unrelated to brewing beer, include 10 theme parks, four subsidiaries in its packaging group, agricultural operations, transportation companies and a resort in Williamsburg, Va.
The theme parks and packaging group alone are worth $5 billion to $6 billion, said Jack Russo, an analyst at Edward Jones & Co.
But selling these assets wont be easy or fast, analysts say. Read the rest of this entry »

From orlandosentinel.com:

Another item on my theme-park I WISH list has come to be. Aquatica, SeaWorld’s water park, has changed they way it refunds deposits for locker and towel rentals. And in a good way!
Previously, guests received a three-dollar in-house credit, not cold, hard cash. The credit was good for a year at Aquatica and SeaWorld. However, beginning this week, Aquatica visitors will get five bucks once they return the key (or towel). Read the rest of this entry »

From chron.com:

A 2½-year-old killer whale died Sunday night at SeaWorld San Antonio, becoming the second orca to die at the theme park in the past eight months.
Early Monday, SeaWorld officials said the female killer whale named Halyn died unexpectedly.
But SeaWorld spokeswoman Fran Stephenson said Monday evening that the whale had been under a 24-hour watch and was on two courses of treatment after her behavior changed earlier in the weekend. She said she didnt know what those changes were.
Tissue samples from the whale will be examined to establish a cause of death, she said, but that will take about six weeks. Read the rest of this entry »

From signonsandiego.com:
SeaWorld in San Diego may become the first business in the United States to obtain a pollution discharge permit for exploding fireworks over a body of water
The staff of the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, a state agency charged with enforcing the federal Clean Water Act, is recommending the first-of-its-kind permit to ensure no harm is occurring to Mission Bay. The boards directors will consider adopting the permit after a public hearing set for Dec. 12.
The proposed permit would apply only to SeaWorld, which has staged thousands of fireworks shows over the bays southeastern quadrant since 1984. Other fireworks displays, such as those sponsored by cities and nonprofit groups for July 4th, would not be affected. Read the rest of this entry »
