This is a huge, tall bridge located in Minneapolis. I drive it twice a day. The entire bridge, loaded with vehicles and repair crews, who were resurfacing the bridge deck, completely collapsed into the river some 70 feet below. It is thought to be a structural collapse rather than any type of terrorism.
Bavanaugh said he was headed northbound on I-35W when he heard a huge rumbling and he saw a huge cloud of white dust as the bridge collapsed. He had his seatbelt on and said if he hadnt, his head would have gone through the windshield.
Bavanaugh said a school bus full of children was ahead of him. He got on the bus and helped children, who he estimated to be 8-12 years old, off the bus and off the bridge.
“It is just horrific,” said witness Marilyn Franzen, who saw the bridge collapse. Franzen said she saw a school bus that managed to stop before the going over the edge of the bridge that she said was carrying 20-30 children. Read the rest of this entry »

EDIT: I probably should have put this in the original post, but this is NOT my issue at all. I am just quoting (As per the block quote tags, and the link) a forum post elsewhere that I found interesting. Sorry if I caused any confusion.
My telephone provider is Packet8 (similar to Vonage). I had no phone jacks, so I was plugging a cordless phone directly into their modem. The service was great, but degraded sharply when I walked any distance from the base. So I decided to hire AT&T to install phone jacks in my house.I informed them I was not a customer; I simply wanted to pay them to wire a few jacks throughout the house and use other service. They informed me I would have to order service with them. So I directly asked if I had any contractual obligation to keep the service for any length of time; they said no. I then directly asked if I could cancel after the wiring was complete, then simply pay for the work performed (about $400); they said yes. After the jacks were operational, I called AT&T to cancel the service, telling the story again. The rep was very nice and immediately removed dial tone as I requested. I then plugged in my modem to one of the jacks, and all phone jacks were working properly with Packet8 dial tone. I had the telephone service I wanted, and AT&T was getting $400 for two hours’ work. Read the rest of this entry »

For Universal the full name “Project Roswell Video F/X” appears on a public document filed recently with the Orange County Comptroller’s Office.
When asked if it might refer to a temporary haunted house for Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights events in October, or to a new permanent theme park attraction, Universal spokeswoman Cindy Gordon said the company does not comment on construction projects.
The county document gives few further details, except the contractor’s name; and Communications Concepts Inc. of Cape Canaveral also is not commenting.
This report in different formats was on the Orlando Sentinel Web site and in the print edition today. I didn’t realize the newspaper was speculating about new attractions now. It seems to be to be a shoe-in for some part of Halloween Horror Nights, therefore, not really worth reporting. I’d like to think it’s a new ride or show. If so, I guess I’ll be proved wrong about it not being worth reporting. I hope I’m wrong.

Jeffrey Norberry, 56, was biking this morning along a secluded area on Walt Disney World property when a deer ran across the roadway and collided with him head-on, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Norberry, who was wearing a helmet, flipped over the handle bars of his bike and the deer before crashing to the ground shortly before 3 a.m.
Hmm, I’ve seen deer on the side of the road in Walt Disney World property before, but the real question is, why was this guy biking at 3 a.m.? That’s really early to get up and exercise. Maybe he works at WDW and was just getting off work?

Grantsburg, Wis. Crews rescued a Pine City, Minn. man from the St. Croix River at Fox Landing, near Grantsburg, Wis. after he spent 12 hours stuck in the water.
At about 8:15 p.m. Monday, authorities received a call of someone with a medical condition needing assistance.
According to the Pine County Sheriffs Office, a group had gone tubing on the river when Martin Rikes tube went flat about two miles south of Fox Landing.
After attempting to get out of the water and walk back, Rike, 39, began having chest pains. He had also slipped on irregular rocks, injuring an ankle and a knee.
When crews attempted to rescue Rike by boat, they found the water was too shallow, causing the boat to get caught on the rocks.
Dispatch said Rike weighed about 500 pounds and said his weight was a factor in how long it took crews to rescue him. Read the rest of this entry »
