Sirius and XM to Merge
From news.com:
In a merger of the two major satellite radio players, XM Satellite and Sirius Satellite announced Monday that they plan to join forces.
The deal, an all-stock merger worth about $13 billion, according to a statement, would create a single satellite radio giant with around 14 million subscribers.
This is very exciting news. I am an XM subscriber and look forward to getting sosome added channels from Sirius. Or, at least, I hope this is how it will work. I really enjoy many of the XM channels and hope that Sirius doesn’t take the foreground with a few XM stations mixed in. It will definitely be interesting to see how they merge the two together. I would imagine that there is plenty of overlap between the two and having 2 of the same 60s, 70s, and 80s channels wouldn’t make sense.
Of course, this means I’ll have to plug my XM back into my car. Right now, I only listen in my wife’s car, as I added an adapter to mine a couple of years ago so I could plug my iPod in.
TweetRage Against the Machine Reunion
From punknews.org:
Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell has announced he will be leaving the group due to “irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences”. There has been no further word on whether the band will continue without him, and if so, who would take over vocal duties.
Meanwhile, the remaining members of Audioslave will be taking part in the “knockout blow” reunion of the year, with their prior vocalist Zach de la Rocha, in the form of Rage Against the Machine at this year’s Coachella festival. Guitarist Tom Morello has stated that the reunion is a one-shot deal.
GREAT news. I thought Audioslave was okay, but not worth listening to beyond occasionally catching them on the radio. Rage Against the Machine, however, is definitely worth reuniting for, even if it’s only a “one-shot”. Hopefully a live album will come out of that performance.
TweetNine Inch Nails New Album Information
There are a few news stories floating around regarding various web sites that have been created as a viral marketing campaign for Nine Inch Nails’ next album, Year Zero. The real news story, however, seems to be lost amongst all of it: Nine Inch Nails is releasing another album. I’m a big NIN fan (though With Teeth was a bit lackluster, IMO) and am excited to hear that the new album is going to be fairly creative and new.
From mtv.com:
“This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere. That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more,” Reznor said in the statement. “I believe sometimes you have a choice in what inspiration you choose to follow and other times you really don’t. This record is the latter. Once I tuned into it, everything fell into place … as if it were meant to be. … The record turned out to be more than a just a record in scale, as you will see over time.
“Part one is Year Zero. Concept record. Sixteen tracks. What’s it about? Well, it takes place about 15 years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you’ll have an idea of the backdrop,” he continued. “The world has reached the breaking point  politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth.”
Concept albums are notoriously hit-or-miss. Pink Floyd’s The Wall is certainly a big one in the hit category and definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. I can only hope that NIN’s new Year Zero lives up to the viral hype, even if the hype isn’t obviously pointing toward promoting the album.
