365 Adventures in 2011: Day 171 – More than meets the eye
In addition to the new KRE-O kits, I picked up the super-duper new figure of Sentinel Prime from the upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon movie, which can’t possibly be any worse than the last one. Leonard Nimoy voices this character too.
Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 170 – Hasbro takes on LEGO with Transformers KRE-O
While wandering through Toys R Us today (as I do quite regularly), my attention was quickly grabbed by what appeared to be Transformers LEGO sets, something that had never been released before. But upon closer look I realized they weren’t LEGO sets after all, but rather KRE-O, a new brand of building blocks from Hasbro that’s taking on LEGO head-to-head. It even says in a shiny sticker on the boxes that it works with “other” building block systems. That’s right, the pieces are nearly identical to LEGO blocks.
I’m not sure how Hasbro can stay clear of a LEGO law suit for patent infringement as they’re so similar. The good news about Hasbro not using LEGO for their kits is that they’re less expensive this way. A KRE-O Bumblebee 335 piece kit was only $25, where as a similar specialty, movie-licensed LEGO kit would likely be $40-50. Likewise the massive 542 piece Optimus Prime KRE-O kit from Hasbro is only $59.99 – likely to have been $70-100 if it were LEGO branded. So, naturally, I bought several of the kits and will happily build them soon!

Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 162 – Return to Star Wars Weekends
It’s the last weekend for Star Wars Weekends 2011 and I hadn’t actually experienced any of it since Star Tours opened a few weeks ago. Even then, I only saw the Star Tours opening and none of the other fun. So today I went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios specifically to see voice actor James Arnold Taylor’s show, which I had heard so many good things about. It was a great show put on by a talented guy. While waiting in line, I got a picture with a Clone Trooper passing by.
Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 149 – Bill S. Preston, Esq… in person!
In a most excellent adventure, today I attended Spooky Empire’s May-Hem weekend on International Drive. And there I met Alex Winter, best known as Bill S. Preston Esq. from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (and its sequel… and the cartoon…). I’ll have much more coverage from the non-non-non-heinous May-Hem event online within a day or two, including an interview with Winter, but in the mean time… be excellent to each other.
(And yes, that is Anthony Michael Hall in the background.)
Tweet365 Adventures in 2011: Day 143 – Gnomeo and Juliet
After several days of Star Tours and Star Wars-related excitement, today was a much calmer and ordinary day. After working all day, having some dinner, and playing some LA Noire, I finally had a chance to watch my review copy of Gnomeo and Juliet, which arrives on store shelves tomorrow.
I’ll post a review tomorrow but in short, the movie was nothing special, but not entirely bad either. I’ve seen much better and I’ve seen much worse.
