From hollywoodreporter.com:
Tim Burton and Disney have found their new Alice — not in Wonderland or down the rabbit hole but Down Under.
Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is in final negotiations to walk through the looking glass in Burton’s take on Lewis Carroll’s classic fantasy novel “Alice in Wonderland.” The deal marks the end of a long search for the big-budget project’s title character.
The film, based on a script by Linda Woolverton (”The Lion King”), will be produced by longtime Burton collaborator Richard Zanuck, former Disney chairman Joe Roth and Jennifer and Suzanne Todd. It will be shot with live-action and performance-capture footage and presented in Disney Digital 3-D. Disney creative executive Jason Reed will oversee the project, set to begin principal photography in November.

From people.com:

Heath Ledger’s legacy will live on not only in a theatre in his hometown of Perth – but possibly through an Oscar nomination, according to one his Dark Knight costars.
“I think Heath will surely get a posthumous nomination for an Academy Award,” Michael Caine said Friday at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, where the legendary actor was honored in a hand and footprint ceremony.
“He was incredible [and] he was amazing,” said Caine, 75. “And I think he will get it. It’s an incredible performance, just wonderful.”
Caine reprises his role as butler Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming Batman film, which pays a special tribute to Ledger during the movie’s closing credits.
Caine isn’t the only person raving about Ledger’s performance as The Joker. “[For] those who knew him and those who had the privilege of working with him, it’s been pretty amazing, the disparity between the person he was and the monster that he created for us,” the film’s director Christopher Nolan said at a press day in June. “To see that being created from this very gentle person is a real testament to his skill as an actor.”

From nytimes.com:
In a significant step toward vanquishing the local video store and keeping couch potatoes planted firmly in front of their televisions and computers, Amazon.com will introduce a new online store of TV shows and movies on Thursday, called Amazon Video on Demand.
Customers of Amazon’s new store will be able to start watching any of 40,000 movies and television programs immediately after ordering them because they stream, just like programs on a cable video-on-demand service. That is different from most Internet video stores, like Apple iTunes and the original incarnation of Amazon’s video store, which require users to download files to their hard drives.
“For the first time, this is drop dead simple,” said Bill Carr, Amazon’s vice president for digital media. “Our goal is to create an immersive experience where people can’t help but get caught up in how exciting it is to simply watch a movie right from Amazon.com with a click of the button.”

From nationalpost.com:

Theres a scene in Journey to the Center of the Earth where three people trapped in a mine get into one of those little trains that run along the underground tracks and go on a roller-coaster ride that takes them up and down and over many bumps and hills and gaps. Its wild and breathtaking and also phoney-looking - the movie is made in glorious 3D with all of the digitized artificiality that the process implies - and it looks for all the world like the test run for a ride at Disneyland.
And maybe it is.
Journey to the Center of the Earth is both one of those summer “thrill rides” youre always reading about in the ads, and also that youre always riding at a theme park. One of the films distributors is Disney, the company that made Pirates of the Caribbean into a film franchise. This feels like a case of turning the tables and trying out proposed new rides in a movie. Read the rest of this entry »
