Free Time and Shrinky Dinks

Whew. It’s been a while since I’ve posted here. Though it seems like months, it’s actually only been around 2.5 weeks. Since the last post, I have:

  • Finalized the Fall 2009 issue of Orlando Attractions Magazine (it’s coming back from the printer any day now);
  • Gone to California for the Haunted Mansion 40th anniversary event and the D23 Expo (don’t miss all my videos and posts about that amazing event here);
  • Caught up on editing videos including this one from Disney’s Bay Lake Tower and this fun one from the Pirates League and the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique;
  • Attended the opening of Kouzzina, the new Greek restaurant at Disney’s Boadwalk Resort (and interviewed chef Cat Cora);
  • Previewed some new menu items for this year’s Epcot Food and Wine Festival (my post about that is coming tomorrow).

And now I’m getting ready for Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens and Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios at the end of this week. I’ll also be visiting the Twilight EyeCon convention on Friday.

It’s been an exhausting but extremely fun couple of weeks. I hope to get back to posting on here more once this week’s events are done and I have some more free time. I managed to find a couple hours of downtime tonight during which I entertained myself by coloring and baking some Ghostbusters Shrinky Dinks…

Before shrinking and dinking:

After shrinking and dinking:

Slimer even glows in the dark. Unfortunately, neither of these photos have a frame of reference so you can’t tell that in the top photo the colored images are around 3-4″ tall whereas in the bottom image they have shrunken down to around 1″ tall.

Yes, this is what I do at 2 a.m. for fun.

I’m not sure this post is actually going anywhere, so I’ll just end it here.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter game remakes may be coming soon

I recently wrote a series of posts about the glorious return of the point-and-click adventure genre of games, which has historically been dominated by LucasArts. Now, it appears that LucasArts may have something equally as exciting in store for us…

From g4tv.com:

LucasArts’ two-pronged attempt to revitalize their classics with The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Tales of Monkey Island appears to be a success. As part of a follow-up interview with LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez about plans for the months ahead, I asked Rodriguez for thoughts on a return of the company’s lauded X-Wing and Tie Fighter flight sim series.

His answer?

“We don’t have any announcements now, but stay tuned,” said Rodriguez. “We will soon…..”

By the way, that’s his number of dots, not mine. We conducted the interview over e-mail. Five dots is far more mysterious than three dots, so I’m willing to bet I’m onto something here.

Whether it’s a full-on remake ala The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition or an addition to the company’s growing Steam lineup…well, who cares? Either one would be the first acknowledgement of a major part of LucasArts’ legacy in a long, long time.

The last major release in the series was X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter X-Wing Alliance. I missed that one.

X-Wing and TIE Fighter were two of the greatest Star Wars games ever to be released. They were fantastic flight simulators (well, space flight at least) that allowed Star Wars fans to embrace their dreams of piloting iconic spacecraft from the films. And they were fun too.

These games are begging to be remade for the XBox 360 in HD with surround sound. Plus, I already own a flight stick for the 360, which I hope the remakes would support. But I’m clearly getting ahead of the news. It is likely that LucasArts is simply re-releasing these games on Steam, as they recently did with many of their other classic games. But I hope it’s much more than that.

Disney sends Comic-Con attendees on Tron scavenger hunt

One of the biggest mysteries at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con surrounded the sequel to Disney’s film Tron. At last year’s Comic-Con, Disney unveiled some test footage and said that “Tron 2.0″ was in the works. The footage was never officially released anywhere, though some shaky camera-phone versions showed up online.

Well this year, Disney has now officially released that same video but are now calling the film Tron Legacy. It seems that the incredible interest level in last year’s clip gave the studio the confidence to green light the film. Here’s the clip:

In addition, Disney set up an elaborate scavenger hunt through San Diego that had some visitors using a blacklight and map given to them to hunt for a mystery Tron-related location. Ultimately, they found “Flynn’s Arcade” (Flynn is a main character in the original Tron movie):

Beyond the ’80s arcade, complete with Tron video game, was the biggest surprise:

It was a full-size light cycle from the upcoming film. Pretty incredible. In addition, posters, t-shirts, and arcade tokens were being handed out. It also looks like the film’s star Jeff Bridges visited at one point as well:

Marvel at Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland from the 2009 San Diego Comic Con

Disney had a big presence at the San Diego Comic-Con this year and it seems they spared no expense. For one of their movie panels, director Tim Burton was on-hand to talk about his upcoming Alice in Wonderland film. Here’s the teaser/trailer they released:

The big surprise at the panel happened at the end when Burton brought Johnny Depp out for a quick hello. Actually, he didn’t much. He simply walked on stage for a moment and then left with Burton:

Separately, Disney carefully constructed a museum of sorts featuring sets, costumes, and props from Alice in Wonderland. Here’s a peek inside:
