Wall Street Journal To Disney: Buy EA

From kotaku.com:

The Wall Street Journal has some advice — we’re guessing unsolicited — for Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger: Maybe it’s time to buy Electronic Arts. Why? Well, the price might be right (right now) given that EA’s stock has taken a pretty serious hit lately, partly due to general economic turmoil and on second quarter corporate earnings from the Madden publisher that WSJ calls “disappointing.” Why does it makes sense?

WSJ notes two potential “win-wins.” First, the Disney-owned ESPN, which could benefit both the sports cable channel and the Madden NFL series. Second, WSJ argues that Disney could save at least some of the “$200 million it spends annually to develop its own games” at Disney Interactive Studios. The internal Disney studio currently works on properties like High School Musical and Tinkerbell.

Snatching up EA could also mean plenty of new, internally developed intellectual property for Disney and all of its subsidiaries. Properties like Mirror’s Edge, Dead Space and Army of Two could be future Disney Pictures projects. As Dante’s Inferno could have. We suppose Disney could send property the other way, too, with future Pixar titles going to EA instead of where they’re currently housed at THQ.

It would be one big orgy of commercial appeal for both parties.

The Wall Street Journal points out that EA’s market cap is at $7.7 billion, a serious drop from the $19 billion of a few years ago. That’s a bargain, it says, one that maybe Disney should go for. We’d seriously hope that, if they did, they’d retain all those smart EA people turning the company’s image and quality around.

Disney to consider cuts

reuters.com

Walt Disney Co executives have been meeting this week to prepare belt-tightening measures that could include job cuts, the Los Angeles Times said, citing people familiar with the discussions.

The sources told the paper that staff reductions were being contemplated companywide.

Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks, asked senior staff to recommend possible cuts in case the economy deteriorates further, according to the paper.

Other divisions have also been asked to make similar evaluations, the paper said citing one executive.

Walt Disney Co could not be immediately reached for comment by Reuters.

Southwest adds pixie-dust

www2.tbo.com

Airlines have been seeking new sources fuel to cut costs for some time, but leave it to fun-loving Southwest Airlines to test the power of pixie dust.

Tinker Bell One, a specially decorated Boeing 737, was scheduled Friday to start flights to Tampa International Airport and other airports during the next month and beyond.

Flight attendants will wear wings a la Tinker Bell and award prizes to passengers who can answer trivia questions about Disney’s classic character from the animated film “Peter Pan.”

While it’s not really about powering airliners, the collaboration between Southwest and Walt Disney Co. is designed to promote the “Tinker Bell” DVD released Monday by Disney. U.S. and Canadian Disney fans bought 668,000 copies of the computer-animated film on its first day of release, about 22 percent above projections, The New York Times reported. Jonas Brothers To Star In ‘Walter The Farting Dog’

From mtv.com:

walter_the_farting_dog.jpg

The Jonas Brothers have lined up another project to add to their already busy schedules. In addition to their 3-D concert movie, a TV show and, you know, that whole music career, the guys have just signed on to star in the film “Walter the Farting Dog,” based on the books of the same name, Variety reports.

And they’re adding another familiar face to the mix — their younger brother Frankie, known as Bonus Jonas. The guys, who previously starred in “Camp Rock,” will play musicians asked to watch the flatulent, overweight dog by a dying aunt. Read the rest of this entry »

Disney dooms childhood stars?

From dailycardinal.com:

Viewers turned out in droves this past weekend to witness the East High School gang sing and dance their way through senior year in “High School Musical 3.” Earning $42 million in the opening weekend alone, Disney has definitely validated their decision to move the “HSM” franchise from cable to the big screen. My frequent readers know I often spend time assailing the mind-numbing stupidity of viewers and their sheep-like devotion to theatrical trash. Yet, I will hold my tongue with “High School Musical.”

The characters are generally likable, and while the plot is generic and tiresome at times, there are still some good times to be had. Besides, I know that once the majority of the cast has been spit out of the Disney corporate machine, there will be little left for them besides crappy B-movies and occasional turns on reality television.

Zac Efron may escape the Disney curse, as he is the most bankable of the “HSM” stars. He has already been fast-tracked for a remake of the Kevin Bacon dancing classic “Footloose” and is raved about in industry circles. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s the high point of a turkey’s career. But once he’s whisked off the stage, what happens?

Disney’s menu change is good for the goose, not the gourmet

From orlandosentinel.com:

Maybe Donald Duck squawked about the dish.

In a move that thrilled animal-rights activists but disappointed some gourmet diners, Walt Disney World has quietly dropped a controversial delicacy from its menus.

Au revoir, foie gras.

On Oct. 1, Disney dumped the traditional French appetizer, made of fattened duck or goose liver, at the last four Disney World restaurants to offer it — Victoria & Albert’s, California Grill, Citricos and Les Chefs de France.
Disney insisted Friday that this was no political statement. Officials wouldn’t even comment on the international animal-rights campaign that calls foie gras production cruel and inhumane and seeks to persuade restaurants to drop the dish.

“It’s really just about making adjustments to the menu,” Disney World spokeswoman Andrea Finger said. Read the rest of this entry »
