365 Adventures in 2011: Day 244 – Remote control zombie

I bought my first major Halloween purchase of 2011 – a remote control zombie! It came from a local Spirit Halloween store, which has some pretty decent new items this year. This guy slowly crawls across the ground forward, backward, left, and right as I control him via a tiny wireless remote. He grunts, groans, and growls as he pulls his half-body around. Should be a fun addition to this year’s decorations! I already have ideas for how I’m going to use him…

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 242 – Halloween shelves are filling

My stalking of store shelves has begun. A visit to Party City showed me a huge section cleared for Halloween goodies, but not quite stocked yet. Soon! There were many areas labeled with zombie-related products. Seems like zombies are the thing this year. I’m sure I’ll end up buying a few new decorations from here… and many other stores.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 241 – Unicron toy is practically planet-sized

Today I added one of the biggest Transformers ever made to my collection. The new Amazon-exclusive Unicron 25th anniversary Transformers movie edition arrived in a huge box and despite the fact that Unicron eats planets, I for some reason wasn’t expecting the toy version to be quite this big. The photo below shows the figure, still in the box, next to a G1 Soundwave reissue. Unicron stands around 15-16″ tall, with the box adding another couple inches. It’s HUGE. I haven’t taken it out of the box yet, but I will soon. And I will transform him into a planet, naturally.

Surprisingly, this is not the biggest Transformer toy ever produced. That honor goes to Fortress Maximus. But this one sure is close. The colors match his appearance in the animated Transformers movie fairly well and apparently he makes sounds and his eyes and fist light up as well, once I put some batteries in there. This character was one of Orson Welles’ last roles before he died, so that makes the toy extra special.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 239 – Thundercats unpacked

It took me a few weeks, but I finally moved a bunch of things around on my office shelves to make room for my new Thundercats toys. A couple are new releases based on the old series (including the Comic-Con exclusive Lion-O) and the rest are from the fantastic new series that I look forward to watching every Friday. These new toys from Bandai are some of the best action figures I’ve seen in a long time. They look just like the characters, they’re highly articulated with well-hidden articulation points, they come with exactly the right accessories, they hold their poses well, and they stand up easily. Many of the figures have interactive features, courtesy of “ThunderLynx” technology – basically a magnet inside each figure that activates movements and sometimes lights/sounds. They’ve really done a great job with all of these figures.

365 Adventures in 2011: Day 237 – Spirit Halloween store has opened!

I couldn’t have been more excited to spot a Spirit Halloween store open for business today. I was driving down 436 near the airport and saw the giant banner, did a U-turn, and happily walked inside for some Halloween shopping fun. I didn’t buy anything today, as they haven’t received all of their goodies yet, but it was a great surprise to find them open more than two months before October 31. I happened to stumble upon them on their opening day too! The rest of the Orlando-area stores should open soon. Now to start planning my Halloween decorations for this year…
