Apple Protects Gaming Trademark

igame.jpg

Via Kryptonlogic Studios:

According to a trademark application, Apple has recently updated their “Apple” trademark in relation to:

…hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games.

So does this mean we’ll be seeing a sweet new Apple handheld gaming device to counter the likes of Sony and Nintendo? Doubtfully. It’s more likely that Apple is keeping their options open and/or playing a bit defensively with the trademarking world.

And besides, any Apple die hard knows by now that the company will always let you down when it comes to video games. Every few years when they announce new partnerships with developers like id, it’s just to keep the hybrid 50% hardcore gamer 50% Apple fanboy from shooting himself.

Location of first Apple Store in China

beijing.jpg

Via Kryptonlogic

The first Apple Store to open in China is reported to be joining 300 shops on Beijing’s Qianmen Street, which is undergoing a $40 million renovation to restore it to Ming-era architecture. The store is scheduled to open before the August 8th opening ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics. The renovated street will become the city’s second pedestrian-only shopping street and it’s reported that Apple will be forgoing its well-established storefront in favor of a design that will blend with the Chinese architecture surrounding it.

China joined the World Trade Organization in 2005, and recently passed laws allowing non-Chinese companies to fully own businesses within China. Dell and Best Buy have already entered the market, which undoubtedly factored into Apple’s decision to include Beijing in the 40 stores scheduled to open this year.

I look forward to seeing the first store in China to open and see how it looks. This is the first Apple store outside the US and Europe.

iTunes Rentals Adds Disney to Stable

From gizmodo.com:

itunesdisney.jpg

It comes as no surprise when we hear that Disney has just joined Apples movie rental service following Fox, late last week seeing as Steve Jobs says “I”m hittin that” to both companies, but it does surprise us when Variety reports that Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. would not participate because of “various competitive reasons.”

Also interesting is the pricing scheme that Apples unleashing. Movie rentals will be somewhere between $2 and $5, depending on the newness and goodness of the movie they decide, not you and will only be valid for 24 hours. Thats it? Even Blockbuster lets you keep a movie for two days before slipping into their “no late fees late fees” period. And, to top it off, theyve got movies from Sony, Universal and Warner Bros. as well.

NBC officially removed from the iTunes Store

nbcu.jpg

From tuaw.com

Now that December has arrived and NBC’s contract has expired, all of their content has been removed from the iTunes Store, as promised. That means no more Bravo, mun2, NBC, NBC News, CNBC, NBC Sports, Sci Fi, Sleuth, Telemundo or USA Network (Go ahead and look. We’ll wait). It looks like the two companies were unable to patch things up, not surprising considering their ugly, public fighting. Good luck to NBC with hulu and that wonderful NBC Direct service, which sounds great. It requires Internet Explorer, the NBC Direct Player (Windows only) and the latest .Net framework. Videos are available for only 7 days after they initially air, and disappear from your computer 48 hours after you begin watching them (unless you remember to renew your license before then). Also, videos will only play on the computer used for the initial download. Mac users cannot use the service, though NBC says a Mac version is “…planned for 2008.” Finally, downloads cannot be transferred to portable devices.

Sad to see NBC go from iTunes since there was tons of shows I liked from there. I guess you can’t win them all.

CONFIRMED: Steve Jobs-esque character added to Epcot’s Spaceship Earth

I have received 100% confirmation that there is a new scene inside Epcot’s Spaceship Earth, which is currently down for refurbishment, that depicts a young, bearded man in jeans, sitting in a messy garage, working on an early prototype of the personal computer. That young man looks a whole lot like Apple founder Steve Jobs, who became Disney’s largest shareholder and a member of its board of directors when Disney purchased Pixar in 2006.

When Steve Jobs joined the Disney family last year, many web sites and blogs joked about having a Steve Jobs animatronic in an attraction. I’m not sure any of them actually thought it would happen… but it has. The new character in the ride may or may not be “officially” called Steve Jobs in the attraction’s new narration (provided by Dame Judi Dench), but it’s very obvious that it is. Though, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, did sport a similar hair style and beard back when the company was created. They’re both seen working in their garage in the photo below, taken circa 1975 (Jobs on the right, Wozniak on the left).

jobswoz.jpg

Spaceship Earth is officially set to reopen on February 18th, but rumors point to an early December soft opening. The focus of the refurbishment is to update the attraction to feature a stronger focus on how technology has evolved over the years. The invention of the personal computer is certainly a major milestone and it can’t be a surprise to anyone that Steve Jobs would be featured in the attraction as one of the pioneers in this field.

Apple considering raise for Jobs?

From news.com:

applappleipodtouch_434×600_270×373.jpg

After years of drawing just a dollar in salary, Apple CEO Steve Jobs could be in store for a raise.

Apple filed its annual report for its 2007 fiscal year Thursday afternoon, and hinted in a section about executive compensation that Jobs could be in for some real money fairly soon. “Because Mr. Jobss continued leadership is critical to Apple, the Compensation Committee is considering additional compensation arrangements for him,” the company wrote.

Now, its not like Jobs is hurting for money. According to Forbes most recent list of the worlds billionaires, Jobs ranks 132nd with an estimated net worth of $5.7 billion, $4.7 billion of which comes from holdings in Disney.

The annual report notes that he holds 5.5 million shares of Apple stock through a series of restricted stock awards over the years–some more controversial than others–that have vested. But it also points out that he hasnt sold a single share of Apple stock in the 10 years since he rejoined the company.

The closing price of Apples stock Thursday? $164.30. So if Jobs were to bail out of Apples stock tomorrow this isnt going to happen, hed pocket $903,650,000.

Double-checking iTunes purchases

From playlistmag.com:

The timing couldn’t be more perfect. I’m on the road, with evenings free to bump against the four walls of my hotel room, the usual assortment of iPods in my computer bag (and also, finally, Apple’s Composite AC Cable to jack one of those new iPods into the room TV’s composite video port) and I receive this message from the iTunes Sto Read the rest of this entry »

Wireless gains propel AT&T as international sales boost Apple

From bizjournals.com:

Telecommunications company AT&T on Tuesday reported third-quarter profits of $3.1 billion on revenue of $30.1 billion. That’s up from the third quarter of 2006, when AT&T posted a $2.2 billion profit on $15.6 billion in revenue.

AT&T acquired Bell South Corp. in December 2006 and recently finalized its merger with Cingular Wireless. The telecommunications company has retail, sales and some back-office operations in Arizona.

AT&T credited wireless growth for the gains. The company has a distribution deal with Apple Inc. to sell its hugely popular iPhone.

Apple on Monday reported a quarterly profit of $542 million on $6.2 billion in revenue, compared with year-earlier numbers of $542 million in profit on $4.8 billion in revenue.

Apple has retail locations in the Phoenix area. Apple CEO Steve Jobs credits stronger computer and international sales for the gains.
