365 Adventures in 2011: Day 260 – Halloween research reading

With Halloween Horror Nights and Howl-O-Scream both featuring haunted houses based on Edgar Allan Poe stories this year, I wanted to reread his most popular works before attending the events this week. While I have much of “The Raven” memorized, it’s been quite a few years since I last read tales like “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” all of which I read through tonight. I also recently reread the poems “Lenore,” “The Bells,” and “Annabel Lee.” And before attending the Horror Nights preview Wednesday night, I will try complete “The Purloined Letter,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Cask of Amantillado,” “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and maybe a couple more short stories. I’m guessing these most famous pieces are the ones that will be represented in the houses and I want to make sure I’m up on all the details before experiencing them firsthand!
