Just before going to bed I played the XBox 360 demo for a bizarre new game called “Catherine”. The description in the demo download area made it sound unique and it certainly is. The game follows an indecisive 32-year-old male lead character through his relationship troubles and bad dreams, with a mixture of Japanese anime-style animations, cel-shaded graphics, and 3D action-adventure platforming. It seems the entire point of the game is to decide whether love can exist without pain, as it asks on the game’s web site. It’s a strange premise for a video game and yet I found myself intrigued by it. I don’t know that I’ll ever bother to play the full version, but the demo is certainly worth trying just for the sheer “huh?!” factor.
