THURSDAY THEME PARK: Adventure Thru Inner Space Virtual Ride-Thru

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about how I miss Virtual Toad, the in-progress 3D recreation of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride as formerly seen in the Magic Kingdom. Today, I have a complete opposite post about a virtual 3D recreation of a ride I never got to experience in person…
Adventure Thru Inner Space Virtual Ride-Thru
Unlike Virtual Toad, the Adventure Thru Inner Space virtual ride-through is complete and exists on DVD. I own this DVD and while I never had a chance to hop into a real “atommobile” in the now-extinct Disneyland attraction, after watching the virtual recreation of the ride, I almost feel like I did experience it. Here’s a trailer:
Incredibly, not only has the entire attraction been faithfully reproduced in CG, but it’s also accompanied by a surround-sound version of the ride’s audio, adding to the overall feeling of being there.
The DVD is available for purchase on the thorough Adventure Thru Inner Space tribute site called AtomMobiles.com (or TheMIghtyMicrosocope.com). Within the site, you can find every bit of information you’ll ever want about the old Disneyland attraction, including a history of its existence, pictures, videos, a script, and much more. Here are a couple of its photos:

Recognize this entrance area? It’s where Star Tours now exists.

The “mighty microscope” was used to shrink guests seated in their “atommobiles” down small enough to see the world of “inner space” first-hand.

I had a blast creating the 5.1 Surround Sound audio for this DVD. I knew, when I saw what Steve was creating, that nothing less would do… This attraction deserves this kind of tribute. Enjoy it once again!
You know, this is THE NUMBER ONE attraction that I wish I could have experienced. It sounded so cool. Thanks for pointing this out, I may have to find a way to grab a copy here very soon.
I rode this in 1967 when I was but six years old. My father convinced me we would actually be reduced in size through the miracle of Disney. I bawled. After a twist and turn in the waiting line, I calmed down and had no problem being miniaturized. I can still remember that giant eye looking at us through the microscope, and watching those teeny tiny little people heading into the unknown….. Looking back now – it was awesome!!!
I remember riding this as a young child when my family used to drive from Colorado to California for an occasional vacation, all the way across the desert in a non-air-conditioned Mustang. I can vividly being in the queue where they had it set up so that the omnimover cars appeared to go into the microscope and at the top of the scope, you’d see miniature versions of the cars. I asked my Dad if that was really how small we’d be getting.
Ahh, the lost innocence of youth…
I also own that DVD from the guy who rendered it and it is very well done. I don’t remember very much of the ride, as I was so young, but watching that DVD really resonates with me, so I can only assume that some subconscious part of my personality is moved by seeing/hearing it again.

Having lived right down the block, I grew up going to Disneyland all the time as a youngster. Adventure thru Inner Space was one of my favorite attractions and I miss it dearly. I bought this DVD a few years ago and it is a wonderful recreation of the entire attraction. It took me right back into the Mighty Microscope, melting snowflakes & the nucleus of the atom. Everything is exactly as it was. This was a great purchase and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
I can’t wait to get this video. I was too young to ever ride this attraction, and I was always really sorry about that. Thanks so much for giving us all the opportunity to experience it!
This was one of my favorite rides at Disneyland . I always rode it whenever I was at Disneyland as a kid. The one thing that caught my eye was when you went by the part of the ride that looked like you were being watched by an eye as if you were really in a microscope
hey disney how about a cd rom with photo realistc simulations of all the disney land rides and atractions over the history of the park with ride thrus etc .it would be a great way to show how cool the park is .for the old agreat way to remember what was and for the young to see the park as it was when there parents were kids.it could also show the new stuff . i think after playing with the cd rom people would want to go to the real park even more .there could even be cd roms for all the parks and the history thereof with ride thrues . it would also make disney alot of money.
