FRIDAY FLASHBACK: Toys from the Tom Hanks movie Big

There are some old movies that you just can’t help but stop and watch every time they come on TV, even if it means sitting through the commercials. For me (and my wife), one of those movies is Big. It’s likely because we’re both still kids at heart and, like Tom Hanks’ character Josh Baskin, we have filled our house with toys that entertain us. So this week’s flashback is devoted to…
Toys from the Tom Hanks movie Big
Big is certainly filled with plenty of fun kids’ toys and other items that make me reminisce about my own childhood every time I watch the movie. Once the grown-up version of Josh Baskin began earning money, he bought a condo and filled it with some of the best of the ’80s goodies available to him. Through the wonder of the Internet, many of these products (or very similar ones) are still available online:
Thundercats Bedding
When Josh invites his soon-to-be girlfriend in for a “sleep over,” you can see that his bunk bed is made up with Thundercats sheets, exactly like the ones pictured here. One set is currently available for purchase on eBay. Thundercats was/is a fantastic cartoon, though I personally had He-Man sheets growing up.
Pin Bot
One of the first deliveries that Josh has sent to his condo is the great pinball machine called Pin Bot. I’m somewhat of a pinball junky and have recently enjoyed playing Pin Bot on the Wii version of Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection, which simulates a number of classic pinball machines. Of course, you can also pick up the full-size machine on eBay.
Laser Tag / Lazer Tag
While exploring FAO Schwarz in New York, Josh plays a quick game of laser tag with another random boy. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the specific (and cheaper-looking) version of the game that was shown in Big, a search on eBay reveals plenty of variations. Years ago, I had one that looked a lot like the one pictured here, though I never had the helmets. The set didn’t work very well and ate through batteries entirely too quickly. Still fun though.
Floor Piano
One of the most famous scenes in Big is when Josh and his boss play the giant floor piano found in FAO Schwarz. The one pictured here is the same piano that’s featured in the movie (though it appears to have been moved to another spot in the store since then). I couldn’t find one quite this large for sale online, but I did find this smaller version on Amazon.
Other Toys
These are just a few of the many toys featured throughout Big that make the movie have such an authentic to anyone who grew up in the ’80s. Other notable products include a Godzilla punching bag, Go-Bots pajamas, silly string, and the “Truckapillar” (which I couldn’t find any information about other than a few images like this one).
Do you have a favorite ’80s toy or product seen in Big? comment!

Hey Ricky. You say you are a pinball junkie? Have you seen what we have here in Las Vegas? http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ More pinball than you can know what to do with, including some one-of-a-kind machines. All playable. Addams Family is probably my all time favorite.
That’s definitely on the list of places to visit when I make it out to Vegas some day.
Wow, that’s what it was called. Ricky, I had a Truckapillar, as a kid, and would play with it for hours in the sandbox. It was battery powered and would roll over pretty much anything. Loved it.
i have been looking for a glow in the dark compass ring like the one josh gave to susan….i cant find one anywhere…=(
could you please tell me if the one in the movie really glowed in the dark..all ive been able to find is just plain ol compass rings….=(
They werent playing Lazer Tag in Big. It was Photon the W.O.W. Lazer tag rip off.
Does anyone know the name of the toy Josh has on his desk – the one that has all the pins in it that you can put you hand or face in and it will make the imprint in the pins?
Been trying to find one for my son but as I do not know what they were actually called it is proving very difficult.
Either reply here or send me and email wlratpack2004@hotmail.com
Thanks in advance.
The toy with the pins can be found at target. Although if I remember right the ones at target have plastic pins. You might also look at spencers at the mall. They might have it. I just found it on amazon. Look up pin art.
