Disney Finally Embracing Song of the South?
Among an abundance of expensive stationary, pens and apparel, Disney has included a very interesting piece of merchandise as part of their Disney Twenty Three / D23 fan club reveal:
D23 Membership Exclusive Framed Limited-Edition Song of the South Cel (Item #300886P)
It costs $1,495.95 and is available to D23 members here.
Does this mean Disney is embracing its long-shunned Song of the South film? It’s a topic that has come up at many of the recent Disney shareholder meetings and fans of the film are eager to see a release on DVD.
The 2009 Disney shareholder’s meeting is about to begin, so we’ll see if Disney finally brings Song of the South out of the Disney Vault.

Possibly if they didn’t already make tons of merchandise featuring the Song of the South characters. This is like a Jim Hill post ;-) Taking a small nugget and wrapping it in enough speculation that someone somewhere could take it as factual evidence and start repeating it.
Sorry, that wasn’t my intentions. In the past, Song of the South has been a hot topic at the annual shareholder’s meetings. Today… not a single mention, surprisingly.
When I saw this cel appear on the D23 site just minutes before the meeting began, I thought perhaps the two were related. Turns out it’s just a single piece of merchandise. Wishful thinking!
They also have a pair of prints.

It seems strange to glorify the art of the movie, but not release it on DVD because it’s too controversial.
