Nickelodeon Starts Production on New Kids Game Show “Brain Surge”

Here’s some slightly old news that I’m just picking up on. It’s fantastic news for anyone who grew up watching Nickelodeon’s many original game shows like Double Dare, Get the Picture, and Legends of the Hidden Temple.

Nickelodeon, the kids cable network, is beginning production of a new game show called BrainSurge. It’s their first all-new game show in a long time, isn’t it? I guess the success of My Family’s Got GUTS made them think of doing more cheap, popular programming. Not a ton is known about the show right now beyond that it begins taping in February in Hollywood, and only kids between the ages 8 and 14 are allowed in the audience. Parents and other non-young people will be put in a special room to watch the show.
They’ve been casting the show for a bit and finally realized a little bit of information. It’s a game of memory and concentration, which almost sounds a bit like the old 90s kids game show Get the Picture. Contestants from the ages 11 to 14 have a chance to win up to $3,000 in prizes if they make it on, which is pretty good for people that age. Losers get sent down the “Brain Drain” to get slimed.
I saw a taping of My Family’s Got GUTS at Universal Orlando a few months ago and really enjoyed it. While GUTS was never one of my favorite Nickelodeon game shows, it was still a fun trip down memory lane. I hope BrainSurge offers the same kind of excitement.

This actually sounds like fun. As much as I like to see the old standard shows where physical challenges were the norm, the sad fact is that not a lot of attention is paid to intelligence on these shows. Maybe this will (in some very small way) push for that. A slightly higher caliber of game show is still a good step, small though it may be. Plus I like the idea of getting slimed at the end… who doesn’t love watching that? I don’t know… oh wait I said it oh no! (gets slimed from above).
That’s not entirely true. Nickelodeon’s Make the Grade was like Jeopardy for kids. Great show.
My daughter auditioned and was just cast as a contestant. Her etaping is on Mar. 17th. For the audition, the kids had to actually play some memory games probably to test their aptitude. From what I was told, the game is a lot of fun.
Any idea when the show will begin to be aired?

i hate to say it, but i really doubt that this is going to be a hit. (it IS about time that nickelodeon changes direction though.) (and who knows, if this show does work, then MAYBE it’ll open the gate for more nick game shows,
the only reason i don’t think it’ll be a hit is because today’s kids are only interested in GARBAGE like zoey 101.
ricky, i agree with you about make the grade, the real difference being that the questions were somewhat balanced, (some of them were about important stuff, and others were trivia-related.) (the trivia mainly came up in the honors round though.) (3 categories (i.e. sitcoms, birds, animal kingdom.) they had to choose 1, all 3 had questions divided up into 7 different categories, to win they had to answer 1 question in each category) ($100 for each right answer, but getting 7 would get them $1,000) (later it was $600 and “a great grand prize”) in their terms a trip to universal studios in florida.) when $1k was at stake a wrong answer or a pass would mean that they would have to forfeit the chance at the big money, but they’d keep going, later if they were wrong they’d come back to it if they had time and they’d give the player another question in that subject but they only had 2 questions in each.)
the reason they would have to forfeit the chance at the big money is because at first they only had 1 question written for each subject.) (the player who made it to the honors round had already won $500 FOR winning the game.)

Well, BuzzerBlog does. Are they saying the CONTESTANTS of the show (meaning like, teen stars) can only be between 11 and 14? Well then.
Jennette McCurdy, co-star on iCarly, aged 16, recently said on her Twitter, http://twitter.com/jennettemccurdy, that she competed in this game.
Also, Jerry Trainor, other main star in iCarly, aged 31, also said on his Twitter, http://twitter.com/jerrytrainor, that he competed on this game, and I quote,
“Off to go shoot a super special star studded episode of Brain Surge, a gameshow that Nickelodeon will be launching soon. I better win!”
That Twitter was posted on March 23.
Anyways, the average, SMART person would realize both of those stars are over the age of 14.
I don’t think “Brain Surge” will be airing in April as a previous poster indicated. I would think July or later like early fall. Anyone know for sure?

Hey guys, I’m on the show. I was in the second to last taping, which was way back in March. I’ve seen myself in commercials, and it says September will be the airing time. Also, I’ve seen some comments saying there will be celebrities. That’s not true. xD It’s just some Nickelodeon kids doing a game show.
