There’s another Transformers live-action movie called Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen coming out on June 26. While I enjoyed the first Michael Bay-directed Transformers film, it did have many flaws, not the least of which was the gnarly look of the Transformers themselves in their robot forms.
While I sort of got used to the fact that Optimus Prime had lips and that Bumblebee was a Camaro instead of a Volkswagen Beetle, the look of Megatron never worked for me as he didn’t even remotely resemble any previous incarnation of the character.
Now, another fan-favorite character, Soundwave, looks like it will be butchered courtesy of Bay. Soundwave was famous for his monotone voice and ability to transform into a cassette player (complete with transforming Decepticon “tapes”). You probably remember him looking like this:
Now take a look at what Hasbro has lined up for the product line for the new Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen film:

What… is… THAT?! No, seriously. Soundwave? What? More proof:

And instead of transforming into this:

He’s going to transform into this:

HUH? Why even bother calling him Soundwave?
It’s the same nonsense Michael Bay pulled with Megatron. Yes, I realize that he wanted everything to “make sense” by only transforming into items that didn’t violate physics. So Megatron turning into a small gun or Soundwave turning into a cassette player wouldn’t make sense. But we are talking about robots from another planet traveling through space and landing on Earth. Would it be such a stretch to say they could not only transform their shape but also their size? Not much of a leap, in my opinion.
Michael Bay - Why must you torture us so?

My guess why they still call him Soundwave: in his robot form, it looks like his chest is a set of speakers. I’m going to call now he has some kind of sonic weapon like they tried to use in the most recent Hulk movie.
I was kind of hoping for a Soundwave iPod or Zune this year too :(

Sorry, Ricky, Gotta disagree…like I said in my email, I think he looks awesome. He would be totally dumb if he turned into a decade out of date electronic and this really makes him look dangerous. But then again, I’ve never been much of a G1 fanboy. Besides, his head is practically the same, He’ll still be making use of sound, and he still has Ravage. I dunno, I guess I just don’t see the problem. Let’s not forget, this is his PREVIEW toy: It won’t be in the movie, so let’s not jump to conclusions yet.

Okay I didn’t really expect him to change into a cassette player in the new movie but transforming into something sound-related would be nice instead of another alien jet. Does everything have to turn into an alien jet?
How about a Marshall stack? ;)

See, but that’s the thing my man…He WON’T be an alien jet in the movie. This is his Cybertronian form, before he gets to Earth. So he’ll have a different body in the movie. Remember, this is just a Preview toy. Besides, I’m positive he’ll use sound and he might even still speak in the monotone voice. An Amp alternate mode is way to small for Soundwave, especially since I gather from the prequal comics that’s he’s a pretty big higher up in the Con army. So I don’t know what vehicle you would consider Sound related, but we’ll see. Rumor was going around he was a truck, but one of the writers I think squashed that. So who knows? One cool thing, the prequal comic seems to imply he still has his G1 mind reading power. Pretty cool!
Oh and you don’t have to worry about Megs being a jet anymore. Although Bay claims he’s not in the movie, we have several new toys confirmed and a new design. He’s a tank now, which is great (G2 Megs was a tank) and the entirity of one of his arms is the tank barrel, like a giant claw. Pretty badass. The design is hidden somewhere on the live action movie blog, along with Ravage.
Ravage looks how you might expect, that is, a skeletal evil cat of death. I’m even warming up to the single red HAL-esque eye.
Speaking of which, head on over to the Transformers movie live action blog quickly, as they still have the photos of the twins up. Sure, they’re ugly, but it’s a funny ugly. Plus I like the giant fists, lol.

Hopefully he’ll at least come across a pawn shop or electronics store and consider scanning a cassette player but ultimately select something else. As long as he sounds like Shockwave, I suppose that’s better than nothing. It’d still be nice if he ultimately were navy blue in color and a bit more boxy with less random metal shards sticking out. Like you said, that’s just the preview figure so who knows what he’ll ultimately look like once he chooses an Earth form.
And Megatron as a tank makes a whole lot more sense.

Ricky! Teaser spot is up!!! It looks AMAZING! I believe the car in it is Soundwave, so he’s not a jet, and we get a great look at Ravage! Oh, and that giant Cycle of death…is ONE constructicon…

Upon closer inspection, I think the car is the new form of Barricade, and those fingers grabbing Sam are most definately Megatron. Nice try telling us he’s not in the movie, Bay.

Soundwave is a satellite.

Here’s some concept art.

A satellite… THAT I like. Makes much more sense than any kind of vehicle. If that’s true, I take back 0.1% of my Michael Bay bashing.

There’s no confirmation he’s a satellite, and looking at the teaser, seeing Ravage come from the ocean, I think it would be awesome if her turned into a submarine. And that concept art implies he’s a truck. In fact, there’s been nothing say he’s a satelitte except for people misinterpreting his Cybertronian form. After all, the package says triple changer.
Basically, it’s not confirmed he’s a satellite. We don’t know what he is.

I’m sorry but I hated the Michael Bay fiasco. It was terrible. The animated movie is so much better than the flash for cash live action nonsense. Really, who thought it was a good idea to put certain sensitive teenage American Pie type jokes in a kid’s movie?
If you want to create completely different characters, call them something else.

Sorry, but I’ve got to be the crank here, but it’s not a kids movie. it’s PG-13. Not PG. Not G. And why did they put jokes like that in the movie? So other people would enjoy the movie besides fans. Hate to tell you but a lot of people thought it was funny. It was something unexpected, and that made it even better. And besides the original movie was terrible when you take nostalgia out of it. As much as I love it as a Transformers fan, it’s horrible. It has bigger plot holes then anything in the Bay flick. And who thought it was a good idea to have Grimlock lock lips with a junkion? Who thought it was a good idea to invent Wheelie and Blur? (Thank goodness they made Blurr so much cooler in Animated.) Oh and who forget the wonderful eighties hair metal as Hot Rod fights random robot fish?
IMO, Movie is better then G1. And I’ll defend htat till I die.
Not to mention Bumblebee was a major improvement from G1. Once an annoying, useless peon is now an actual Autobot soldier.

The original G1 film is pretty awful in music selection. As much as I love Weird Al’s “Dare to Be Stupid,” it’s totally out of place in that movie, as is Eric Idle’s role. The film has many great moments, but that scene isn’t one of them.
I thought the new scene in question here (in Sam’s bedroom) was definitely uncalled for. While I agree that Bay’s Transformers was not a kid’s movie, the “comedy” presented in that scene just wasn’t funny. I thought the Autobots lurking outside his window throughout that sequence were completely out of character. They went from robot heroes to bumbling idiots in a matter of seconds.

Thats my favorite scene in the movie! I thought them hiding was the exact comedy the movie needed. Come on, Ricky, give them some slack! They were only on Earth at that point for about an hour! They don’t know whats what. And since when can a hero not be a fool at times? Them being flawed made them more human, and gave them more character. Transformers has had comedy through out all it’s incarnations. Watch G1 and you will see hundreds of examples of the Autobots looking like morons. Who can forget when the Decepticons got “Drunk?” Was that any better or worse, or appropriate?
I know I sound like a jerk about all this, but I just feel this movie gets a lot of undue disrespect from the fans and everyone else. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it gets so trashed simply due to who directed it. It’s a faithful adaptation and it was loads of fun.
And, well, look at it this way- the next one promises to be a lot darker.

If anyone is going to Comic Con tomorrow in NYC, Disney is showing the first 50 minuets of “Up.” I am trying to go to see it, plus it’s Comic Con!

Maybe he’s supposed to be Bay’s screwed up version of an Ipod. He is a strange man … :/

Besides, I sure that ravage is the one that transform into a satellite. And in the teaser trailer, the silver car is actually sideswipe (yeah, i know sideswipe was suppose to be red). Not soundwave or barricade.
My conclusion: This movie designs would be great for a Lego Bionicle movie….. instead of a transformers movie. They looked like pile of random scrap metal. Dammit!! I’m getting old much too fast ….

The silver car in the trailer is Sideways. And Sideswipe looks so much better in his movie form. Ravage is a part of Soundwave.

Yeah, you are right, scoot. My bad. What bothers me was that untill now, hasbro still haven’t show the design for earth mode soundwave…. I’ve started to think maybe there was no earth mode for soundwave after all…..
