WEDNESDAY WHINE: Those Annoying ‘Kidz Bop’ Albums & Videos

I’ll admit I’m a bit of a music snob. Nearly all popular music does not appeal to my ears. However, I can still understand why pop music is loved by many. But when children are grouped together to cover contemporary music for the sake of relating it to a younger generation (and supposedly cleaning it up), that’s when I cringe. Unfortunately, that act has happened 15 times in the form of…
Kiz Bop Music
Before I get into it, here’s a sample:
Would you believe that’s only the latest installment of 15 Kiz Bop albums (in addition to several other themed collections)?
You might be asking: ”What’s so bad about children singing popular songs?” Plenty.
This week, I’ll go for a three-pronged attack:
1. What’s wrong with the original songs?
Covers of songs are fine, and sometimes better than the originals, when actual musicians are performing them. Do we need to “dumb” these songs down for children by having kids sing them instead of real artists?
There is already enough wrong with the over-commercialized world of music today. Vocals from artists who have little talent are digitally enhanced so they are at least in tune. Real instruments are replaced by samples and loops. Now we expect children to properly appreciate music by listening to other kids sing?
Now, I realize that many would say that much of today’s popular music contains lyrics that are not appropriate for children to hear. I don’t necessarily see that as true, as I was listening to Dr. Dre’s The Chronic when I was only 11 years old. I knew enough not to repeat its many swear words in public. Why are today’s children being babied so much?
But despite the fact that Kidz Bop changes some of the lyrics to its songs to make them more wholesome, they are still fooling parents with these supposedly child-friendly albums. Which brings me to…
2. Inappropriate Lyrics
Again, I’m not fond of the act of censoring any songs for childrens’ sake. But, if it’s going to happen, at least do it right. Don’t trick parents into thinking that the song selection is carefully chosen and lyrics are carefully altered (as they’ve stated here) to make the songs appropriate for kids. Kidz Bop certainly claims to be doing this.
An example: “Disturbia” by Rihanna
This song was featured in the above commercial as a selling point for the album. The song, among other things, describes a mental place in which one is confused about life. I could see that relating to children. But, the song does contain this lyric:
Faded pictures on the wall, it’s like they talking to me
Disconnecting on calls, the phone don’t even ring
I gotta get out or figure this sh** out
It’s too close for comfort, oh
I’m not a parent, but I’ll guess that most parents who are concerned enough about music content to buy their kids a Kidz Bop album wouldn’t want this lyric sounding out in their house. Of course, Kidz Bop censors the lyric… but does anyone really think kids aren’t going to want to seek out the original after hearing the butchered version on the Kidz Bop CD? And won’t they hear the original lyric then? And potentially want to sing along with it?
If you don’t think this would happen, check this out. Kidz Bop encourages children to upload videos of themselves singing to their Web site, like a mini-YouTube. In this case, young Paige decided to sing along with the original Rihanna version of the song. It turns out it was the radio edit, where the swear word is muted, but you certainly still get the idea.
This is just one of many, many, many examples of songs that make their way onto Kidz Bop that will likely be seen as inappropriate for children by the very parents that hope to buy a CD that contains nothing but appropriate material. Nice work, Kidz Bop!
For some real humor on this subject, don’t miss this Kidz Bop parody video.
3. Annoyance Factor
This is the most petty of my three complaints, but I’m sticking to it. These songs sung by children are simply annoying. Couldn’t Kidz Bop have gotten some individual, talented kids to sing them rather than just lumping a bunch of kids together and having them all sing simultaneously?
Despite the fact that I think most of the songs featured on Kidz Bop are not good in their original form, they’re a thousand times worse when the backing tracks are re-synthesized and the vocals replaced with sub-par singing from children. It all just seems like an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of ‘tweens’ uploading videos to YouTube of themselves dancing around to various songs. Oh wait, that’s exactly what it is.
A Closing Message to Parents
Don’t buy this garbage. Subjecting your kids to listening to poorly-covered pop songs sung by children is not the way to get them to appreciate music. There is absolutely nothing artistic about Kidz Bop.

I agree with your second point in particular. Often, kids TV shows here in the UK will use the instrumental versions of Hip-Hop songs as background music for them to talk over. Pretty harmless. But if any kid were to do their research, and the find the original version with vocals, they’d be in for a shock. A great example is “My Name Is” by Eminem.
this generation has a lot of weird things like this… I always found it weird hearing the commercials and wondering what happens when the kids hear the “clean” version on the radio.. or acquire the original… I don’t mind if the artists release a cleaner then radio version for kids.. but kids singing badly… no!
Greatd post. I was listening to an old “This American Life” podcast: A study showed that people listening to music find children’s voices the most annoying of all types in pop songs, even more annoying than high pitched operatic style sopranos.
I agree this is the worst waste of time and money for parents. I have a nine year old and she thinks they are a waste.
I surprised you didn’t mention my biggest pet peeve. Artistic integrity. I know one hit wonders might want to get all the $$$ out of one song they can, but what about the so-called ‘Real’ artists. Why would U2, Green Day, Weezer, Linkin Park and many others. How do they justify their ‘serious’ work being sung by kids? Does Bono really need another mansion?
David: That doesn’t surprise me. I’ve heard a few recent pop songs that utilized children’s voices in the chorus and they are absolutely obnoxious.
Greg: Very true. I’m going to guess that in many cases it has less to do with the artists and more to do with their record labels.
“Couldn’t Kidz Bop have gotten some individual, talented kids to sing them rather than just lumping a bunch of kids together and having them all sing simultaneously?”
Young girls love getting together with their friends and singing along to their favorite songs. By recording a bunch of kids singing simultaneously, a child can simulate that experience in her own home without the hassle of having to make friends and coordinate a play date.
That said, my 9 yr old likes classic rock. She can sing along with “American Pie”, but I get a little bothered when she whistles along to J.Geils Band’s “Centerfold”.
i was maybe 6 or 7 when kids bop came out. but i didn’t realize that it actually kids singing it in the cd i thought it was puting a bunch of “good” songs together and they just had them singing in the commercial. For christmas or something my mom got me a kids bop type cd and i actually realized what it was.. i never listened to that CD again
There are a lot of things that don’t make sense in this world. Quantum physics, the designated hitter rule, why Paris Hilton is famous, and the popularity of Kidz Bop.
I remember the good old days when if a song had inappropriate lyrics, they just didn’t play it. Not try and sanitize it for my precious little ears. I know my parents never ever censored what I listened to, and only once or twice ever felt the need to avert my eyes during movies. And I’ve turned out “fine.”
Is it just lazy parents? “Oh, this says it’s for Kids, it’s fine for little Connor and Madison.” Without doing any research themselves?
BTW, those links about the songs that are getting let in are both hilarious and horrifying.
I could not possibly agree more. Although I have Tivo, there are times when commercials seep into my psyche, and the adverts for this “product” never seem to amaze me. I’m a parent and a musician. If you don’t want your impressionable young darling to not hear this music in the wild, then turn the bloody channel. I regularly let (force?) my son to listen to a mix of jazz, classical, first wave and current rock to give him an appreciation for all music.
River, I hate to think that “Centerfold” qualifies as “classic rock” (I reserve that for late 60′s, early 70′s bands), but regardless, I was 11 when Centerfold came out. I loved it, sang it a lot, and am not (clinically) warped. ;)
They couldn’t have picked more innapropriate songs…
“So What” – so I’m gonna drink my money…
“When I Grow Up” – I wanna have boobies…
“Let it Rock” – Stuck his middle finger to the world, to the world…
not to mention “Hot N Cold”
… you PMS, like a b****, I would know.
Thanks, this grinds my gears too but yeah, I’m looking at the track listing and how did Selina Gomez get a song on there? And the “When I grow up” lyric is actually “I wanna have groupies” which is just as bad. My thing is I don’t mind kid’s listening to “adult” music. If Disney can play it on a ride 8 year olds can listen to it(which they do), there’s no real problem. In particular one train plays the loop with three songs from one of Aerosmith’s more overtly sexual albums Pump which I got as a birthday gift when I turned 14.
As I said in my original post, I’m all for letting kids listen to “adult” music as well. I did and I think I turned out fine. ;)
My problem is that Kidz Bop is sending the message to conservative parents that they can trust their song selections, as they have been screened and/or edited to be “appropriate” for kids. Many parents will not agree, especially when their kids hunt down the unedited versions of the songs.
did you and chis brown get in a fight yes or no.
Your blog is like an encyclopedia for those who want to know more about this. Thanks for the interesting information.
i agree very much. if only the world knew… and yes i cant stand them singing.,.. they dont even sound like singing. just kids screaming the lyrics out..and is a waste of your moneyy
As I said to my niece once, I am waiting for Kidzpop to sing songs from Disturbed. That would be a riot censoring those songs.
I think that Kidzbop is unnecessary and takes away from the original artist. It also takes away money that rightfully belongs to them.
