THURSDAY THEME PARK: Rare Disney Park Characters

As you walk around Disney’s theme parks, you’re bound to encounter a character at some point or another. Whether it’s on a stage show, at a meet-and-greet, or just randomly wandering around, characters are everywhere. While some classic characters like Cinderella and Mickey Mouse will never vanish from the parks, others come and go with movie and television trends.

Today I thought I’d take a look at some of the more difficult to find…

Disney Theme Park Characters

You can click each character’s photo below to take you to one of several excellent web sites devoted to characters autographs and/or pictures.

Scrooge McDuck shows up around Christmas-time at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in the Magic Kingdom, both during the parade and swapping out with Donald Duck at a meet-and-greet. Unfortunately, he’s nowhere to be found for the rest of the year. Scrooge is one of my favorite Disney characters and I’d really like to see more of him in the parks.

LaunchPad McQuack still makes some appearances in the parks, but definitely not as many as when DuckTales and Darkwing Duck were still on the Disney Afternoon block of television programming.

Darkwing Duck is another victim of the Disney Afternoon’s demise. Another of my favorites but, unlike Scrooge, I have never seen Darkwing in the parks. When is the last time you saw him inside a theme park?

Rebecca Cunningham was one of the stars of Tale Spin, though not a terribly popular one. I’m surprised that she even made appearances in the parks. Tale Spin is definitely the least-discussed show from the Disney Afternoon.

Ms. Piggy and Kermit the Frog used to make appearances at the then Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios) theme park near MuppetVision 3D. While MuppetVision still exists, these two never make in-person appearances anymore.

Donatello and the other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also used to show up regularly at the Disney-MGM Studios. They even had their own stage show and Turtle Van that would drive around the park. Later the Turtle Van was transformed into the Green Army Men van, which is now for sale.

April O’Neil, the Ninja Turtles’ human friend, appeared at the Disney-MGM Studios as well. I’m a huge TMNT fan and am extremely disappointed that I never had a chance to see these characters in person. This year is the franchise’s 25th anniversary, but I doubt that we’ll see a comeback for these characters in the parks.

Roger Rabbit hasn’t been spotted in a Disney theme park for years. That is, he hasn’t been seen outside of his Disneyland dark ride, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin. You’d think that having a ride at Disneyland would be justification enough for being allowed to wander the park. I guess not.

Sora is the main character from the popular Kingdom Hearts series of games. I’m very surprised to find out that he did make a few in-park appearances when the first game came out. Given the somewhat-frightening look on his face, I’m not surprised he hasn’t shown up since.

Flounder from The Little Mermaid very rarely shows up in the parks, likely due to his bizarre walking-on-fins style of getting around. He has been spotted occasionally at the recent Pirate and Princess Parties at the Magic Kingdom, but it’s often only the more-mobile Sebastian hosting the dance party at Ariel’s Grotto.

Thumper from Bambi is a surprisingly-rare character to find in the parks. Given the amount of Disney merchandise that features this cute rabbit, you would think he’d make a few more appearances to sign some autographs.

And many more…

That is certainly not all of the rare characters that have been seen in the parks over the decades they have been open. I invite you to check out these great web sites for more character photos and information on where/when to find them:

Do you have a picture of a rare character in the parks? Do you have a character you’d like to see more often (or ever)? Post in the comments about your rare character experiences.

  1. Bryan Irrera says:

I have a picture that I’ll have to scan from my trip in 1976…with Thumper, who was maybe a little more prominent then?

  2. pupspals says:

Gadget from Rescue Rangers is a rarity too despite having her own ride in Disneyland.

Saw Darkwing when they had the 50th anniversary thing at the castle on 5/5/05. so they remember him at least, they just don’t use him like they should.

Ninja Turtles has me stumped though. They must have licensed those guys…

  3. turlaach says:

Scrooge McDuck is at Paris quite a bit, I have a photo of him there, from the Summer.

  4. I remember the turtles… They were at the studios around the time those live action movies came out. I guess disney got them for a steal, like when they had that goosebumps attraction / show at studios as well.

  5. Jeremy M says:

Got pictures with Roger Rabbit at Disneyland. I think Gus needs to return. I was shocked to see all seven dwarfs and Snow White at the Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom. Something you don’t ever see except for a parade at Disneyland.

  6. Jeremy M says:

Forgot to mention, this was an awesome post. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Gordon says:

I have a picture of one of the ridiculously rare characters… the Big Bad Wolf:

(I’d post a link, but I don’t seem to be able to).

If I dig throgh my old pictures I think I have Roger Rabbit clowning with Minnie. Also, Esmerelda and Quasimoto.

In Japan I got pictures of Jose and Panchito (never seen them in the US). I also got a picture of the teddy bear named Duffy. I never heard of him, but the Japanese people were (apparently) thrilled to see him.

  8. Gordon says:

Oh, I also have a picture of Kuzco (another ridiculously rare character).

  9. Matt says:

If you have any pictures of rare characters, mail or e-mail them in to Orlando Attractions Magazine.

  10. Stephen says:

I beg to differ with you on the Ms. Piggy and Kermit the Frog section of your article here. As much as I agree with everything you have posted and I find it a shame that these characters are not see as much as they should be, Kermit the Frog and Ms. Piggy can frequently be seen during the daily parade at Disney’s Hollywood Stuidos. And Sweetums can be seen everyday in the Muppet Vision 3-D attraction as part of the performance, however, he is not available for autographs and pictures. (As nice as that would be.)

  11. Matt says:

Kermit and Miss Piggy used to be in the Cars and Motor Stars Parade, but that parade is gone. Now it’s the Block Party Bash with no Muppets.

  12. WEDWay Bleu says:

I never saw The Rescuers in the parks, but apparently they’re over in Tokyo Disney Sea. They were featured on one of that park’s promo videos. So costumes for them do exist, and it’s likely they were in the parks back in the late 1970s and I just never saw them.

  13. paul says:

I saw Darkwing Duck, this past Sunday, Jan 11, 2009. He sto0d near the backside of Animal Kingdom in the Disney Marathon. I heard many people comment that they had no idea who he was.

  14. Mike(Coasterfreak516) says:

Back in the 1992 Easter Parade the Ninja Turtles were in it. They were also promoted back in the 1993 Disney vacation planning video. I know for a fact that they did have the old Disney Afternoon show with the characters from the current Disney Afternoon shows that were in rotation in Mickey’s Starland before it became Mickey’s Toontown Fair. And if anyone is looking for a plush Roger, goto Mickey’s Toontown in Disneyland, they still had them circa December 2008.

  15. My mom still to this day talks about the Orange Bird character at Walt Disney World. I don’t remember it (I was just a baby) but I had a few little, rubber figurines of this strange character.

Apparently, this character is making a comeback in Japan.

  16. loosetoon says:

I think Figment is pretty rare. I’ve been trying every year for about 4 years for him to be in his special are behind the Imagination Pavilion and I have yet to score. I got my picture with Donald, Jose and Panchito in 07.

  17. Stephen says:

Personally I would like to see Roger Rabbit, but not mentioned on this list is also Dr. Ludwig Von Drake, who is quite possibly my favorite character ever.

  18. Eric says:

Figment was available in April 2007, my son has a picture with him. I thought he was a regular.

  19. talfonso says:

Gosh, Roger Rabbit – you really got me started right here! I sure hope he’ll return to the parks besides TDL (especially here in Florida, at WDW) because I haven’t seen him since 1997! C’mon Iger, you got to believe!!!

  20. Shirley says:

Does anyone remember seeing the Gummi bears at Disneyworld in Florida? We have Tummi’s autograph back in 1987 but never got a picture of him. Would anyone have pictures of the Gummi bears?

  21. Jeremy says:

Hi Shirley, back in the 80′s I went to Disneyland with my grandparents. We have pictures with two Gummi Bears. If this interests you, I’ll put a link here and you can check them out.

  22. Silver says:

hey, OP, just stopping by on my way around the net and figured i’d let you know that Thumper now makes frequent appearances at Disney’s Animal Kingdom [WDW] with Miss Bunny.
take care (3 neat place you’ve got here
    -silver

  23. jen dent says:

We saw on Thumper and Miss Bunny at AK on Nov 11, 2009..but who is Miss Bunny? I do not recognize the character…lots of people were excited to see this RARE character out and about?

  24. Paul says:

Oh my gosh, I had always hoped Sora would appear in the parks, I had never seen a picture of that before.
It’s too bad I couldn’t have got just one picture with him..I’m surprised he’s not seen more in the Tokyo Parks.
