A wayward manatee was rescued off of Cape Cod in Massachusetts on Saturday morning in frigid waters. Rescue crews were trying to get the manatee back home to Florida to a rehabilitation center. Unfortunately the manatee could not make it though, as he has died.

The wayward manatee was said to be very young, and was rescued on Saturday in the waters off of Dennis, Massachusetts.

The manatee became very popular with the public, to the point where they gave him the name Dennis.

Manatees need to stay in warm water, and are usually found around Florida and Georgia.

Rescue workers struggled for hours to get the manatee out of the water, as he weighed in at 1,000-pounds.

He was attempting to get back to Florida so that he could go to a rehabilitation center.

Unfortunately though he was unable to make it, as he died on the way.

When rescued, he had a body temperature of 73 degrees, far below the normal 97.5 degrees.

A necropsy is going to be held to figure out the cause of death.
