From united.com:
If you are traveling on or after August 18, 2008 on an Economy ticket or Economy award ticket purchased on or after June 13, 2008, a $15 service fee will apply for your first checked bag. Also, as previously announced, a $25 fee will apply for a second checked bag, depending on when you purchased your ticket and when you are traveling.
So if I am reading this correctly, now you will be charged for all of your luggage on Economy class — $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second. It’s like a car dealer saying “Oh, you wanted tires? That’s an extra charge.” Now all they need to do is put out a restriction on carry-ons….say nothing bigger then a sandwich bag. “Oh, you wanted an actual seat? That’s an additional charge.” Let’s hope this “They’ll never know we are raising prices if we just start charging for stuff” theory begins to trickle down to all consumer services:
“Oh, you want novacaine? That’s an additional charge.”
“I’m sorry there is an extra charge for silverware at this restaurant.”
“Um, there is actually a charge for a prescription bottle ….here, put out your hand.”
Great…..

Sadly you’ve got to start looking at the bigger picture.
The world is running out of fuel. Trust me, it will get worse.

I’m sorry but that is not good enough. The world isn’t actually out of oil…it is the cartels that have power over it who determine the price. You seen Dubai? All the stuff they are putting in? They LIKE doing that so they keep their control on how much oil goes out all the time.
And it wouldn’t be such a high price if places like China weren’t subsidising the prices that the people pay…..China wouldn’t be using so much if the people paid the proper price.
Anyway…I’m really angry about United….we generally ALWAYS fly them. My prayer is that this is NOT going to apply for international fares.
I’m not commenting on the higher prices, just that they seem to think they can “trick” us into believing prices are staying the same and then tagging on the extras. Chocolate production prices go up — well, don’t just charge more, just keep the price and the bag size the same but put less product in it. Big business must feel the “idiot” consumers won’t know the difference — sadly, they are probably right for the most part.

Actually Louise, the U.S. subsidizes fuel here as well (hard to believe lately). Look at our prices compared to the U.K. This strikes me as a class action lawsuit ready to happen. How can an airline expect people not to bring a bag? C’mon California do your job and file some court papers!

The airlines are getting more and more ridiculous by the day it seems. i was just reading about airlines charging for Pillows and water. It’s bad enough flying has become such a miserable experience with the totally inept security procedures now we’re being nickle and dime’d to death. Stuff like this has made my wife and I decide to tack an extra day onto our vacations and start driving down for our regular wdw trips rather than fly. With a fuel efficient car we come out ahead now cash wise and the extra time spent driving will be well worth it to ditch the headaches the airlines are causing these days.

That’s not surprising. UAL and US Airways do alot of code-sharing flights. The two would need to share the same policy. …airfare+fee+fee+fee+fee…kind of like rental cars and hotels some places too.
