Amid thunderous applause from hundreds of spectators Friday morning, Lumiere the loggerhead sea turtle made her way down the beach to the ocean.

The Caribbean Conservation Corporation of Gainesville released the turtle, with a GPS transmitter and antenna affixed to her shell, in front of Disneys Vero Beach Resort.

Lumiere is the last of eight turtles — two each of leatherbacks, loggerheads, hawksbills and greens — from Florida, Nevis, Panama and Costa Rica released with transmitters as part of the Tour de Turtles program, Caribbean Conservation Corporation spokesman Rocio Johnson said.

Scientists hope to learn more about the turtles behavior in the wild to further conservation efforts.

“We need to discover more about their habits at sea and identify migratory patterns that may hold the key to their survival,” Johnson said. “This knowledge helps researchers, conservationists and governing agencies make more informed decisions about sea turtle conservation methods and policies.”

About 10 p.m. Thursday, Lumiere nested beachside in front of the Sea Oaks community on State Road A1A. Biologists captured the turtle overnight and applied a resin to her shell to hold the PPT, or Platform Terminal Transmitter, in place for the next year. Lumiere also will raise awareness about the threat of light pollution along coastlines.

Earlier Friday morning, a rehabilitated sea turtle was released on the same beach by biologists from Disneys Animal Programs in Lake Buena Vista.
