Further adventures from yesterdays trip to Disneys Hollywood Studios.
The area right across from Toy Story Mania is open for business: a gift shop, a grab-and-go eatery/wagon, a photo opportunity. … Ironically, it was tough to take pictures of the photo spot. It was closed at first and window glare kept me from getting good shots. Later, it was slammed with parents and young ones.
From the outside it looks cool — but perhaps claustrophobic. Would love to hear from anyone who made it inside.

File this under Only in America; the recently-passed national transportation bill includes $42 million to fund further research on a proposed Anaheim to Las Vegas (Disneyland to Casinoland) magnetic levitation high-speed rail system, designed to whisk the entertainment-starved between the two spots at speeds up to 310 mph. I can just see parents loading the kids on the Maglev and shipping them off to Disneyland while Mom and Dad hit the craps tables in Sin City.
This funding, of course, is only a drop in the enormous bucket of this cutting-edge technology. The final cost to construct the system is currently estimated at $12 billion. Imagine the ticket prices- even more than entry to Disneyland, including refreshments! Read the rest of this entry »

Hope you werent expecting a big blow-out — or even trumpets — for the grand opening of Journey to Narnia: Prince Caspian Thursday at Disneys Hollywood Studios. It was short, but distinctive. Cue the horse
(Speaking of pervious tenants, some of the props from the first Narnia movie has been transplanted over to the Studios AFI exhibit at the end of the Studio Backlot Tour.)

From iht.com:
The Disney Cruise Line has paid a record US$331,200 for one of its ships to cross the Panama Canal.
The Panama Canal Authority says the 964-foot (295-meter) “Disney Magic” made the crossing May 16.
Panama increased canal fees last year and now charges cruise liners according to number of beds rather than cargo capacity. The “Disney Magic” has 875 staterooms.
Canal authorities said Tuesday that the previous record fee paid by any ship was US$317,142, set on May 7 by the cargo vessel “MSC Fabienne.” The high for a cruiser was US$313,000, set last October by two Norwegian Cruise Line ships.
The U.S.-built waterway earned US$1.76 billion in fees last year. A US$5.25 billion expansion is to be completed by 2014.

The Walt Disney Company, concerned that its main Web site is not entertaining enough, is moving once again to overhaul Disney.com.
Among the changes on the new Disney.com, visitors can use a cellphone to create a butterfly pet for an avatar in Pixie Hollow, a virtual world built around the character Tinker Bell.
It will be the second recent makeover for the company’s marquee site, which is still the top Internet destination for children’s entertainment but faces increasing competition from players like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and WebKinz. Read the rest of this entry »

Members of the union representing 2,300 workers at three Disneyland hotels dressed as cartoon characters and protested at the park Tuesday morning.
The pickets are part of an ongoing effort by the union to influence contract talks that are underway between the union, Unite Here Local 681, and Disney management.
“Talks have progressively gotten worse,” said Unite Here 681 President Ada Briceño. “We have been making sure Disney knows we’re serious.”
Briceño complained that Disney’s proposals have included a two-tiered wage system under which new union workers would not make the same wages as veteran union workers in the same positions. Read the rest of this entry »

Japanese police arrested a 19-year-old man Monday for allegedly threatening on the Internet to go on a stabbing rampage at Tokyo Disneyland.
The message, posted on a website by someone using a cellphone June 15, came a week after a man posted similar warnings before killing seven people in a downtown Tokyo knifing rampage. Authorities were also searching for a woman suspected of wounding three people in a knifing incident Sunday.
Since the deadly stabbing attack in early June, police have arrested several people for allegedly using the Internet to make chillingly specific threats of violence. Read the rest of this entry »
