From go.com:

Commenting on the announcement, Cook said, “We couldn’t be more proud and excited about our upcoming line-up of feature projects. With so many great films literally on the drawing boards and computer screens, we felt that now was the perfect time to give moviegoers all over the world an update on the state of our art. In a year when our Studio is marking the 80th anniversary of Mickey Mouse, the character that started it all for us, it seems especially timely to share our plans for the future of animation. With John Lasseter and Ed Catmull guiding our creative efforts both at Emeryville and in Burbank, this is as exciting a time as any in our history.”

Lasseter added, “This is an amazing time for animation at Disney and Pixar, and it’s a thrill to be working on such a diverse and original group of films with such an all-star team of filmmakers. The thing I love best about my job is that I get to work at both Disney and Pixar with filmmakers who are passionate about their projects and who are the absolute best in the business. We’re excited to be pushing the boundaries of 3-D and computer technology to tell our stories in the best possible way. At the same time, we’re drawing on our past to emphasize memorable characters, original edge-of-your-seat stories, and believable worlds. Walt Disney and his creative team taught us how to blend comedy, powerful emotion, and action-filled excitement in our films, and this group of incredible filmmakers is bringing their own originality and sensibilities to the process.”

April 22 - Ceremony day at Walt Disney World.

It appears that there’s going to be a double-dose of ceremonies on April 22 this year. In honor of Animal Kingdom’s 10th anniversary, a rededication ceremony will take place in front of the Tree of Life just before the park opens. April 22 is Earth Day, a fitting birthday for a park all about animals, plant life, and conservation. In attendance at the ceremony will be Dr. Jane Goodall and Walt Disney World Resort President, Meg Crofton.

At the Magic Kingdom, presumably at the same time (or shortly thereafter), also on April 22, Disney will announce its first-ever Chief Magic Official in a ceremony in front of Cinderella Castle.

So, if you’re going to be at Walt Disney World on the morning of April 22, you can choose between attending one of the two ceremonies, as it appears you won’t be able to get to both.

I was really looking forward to seeing the first CMO announced as well as enjoying Animal Kingdom’s rededication. Now I have to choose which one to go to.

Chief Magic Official (CMO) Top 3 Announced

From latimes.com:

With nearly 500,000 online ballots cast, the field in the Disney Dream Chief Magic Official (CMO) competition that once numbered 1,300 contestants has been narrowed to the Top 3: David “Blooper Reel” Hawley of California, Justin “Adventurosity” Muchoney of Pennsylvania and Tripp “Radio DJ” West of Georgia.

Online voters cast ballots throughout March for their favorites among the Top 10 finalists. (Watch videos and read profiles of the Dream CMO finalists.)

The Top 3 vote getters travel to Walt Disney World in mid-April for a head-to-head competition that will be videotaped and voted on again by the online public April 17-21.

The reality television-style tests of creativity, enthusiasm and Disney theme park knowledge include:

Stroller mix-up — Match the stroller with the correct accessory bag.

Towel folding — Create a towel animal following a training session.

Noise making — Generate the loudest crowd reaction.

Park information — Offer assistance, directions and tips to visitors.

Face painting — Create a design following a training session.

The overall Dream CMO winner will be crowned in front of Cinderella’s Castle at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom on April 22. The winner serves as a goodwill ambassador at Disney parks in Florida and California.

New American Gladiators Season 2 Tapings/Tickets

Season 2 of the new American Gladiators is coming in May and tapings begin on Tuesday, April 8th.

This time around, it’s being treated more appropriately as a sporting event, rather than a studio TV show, as AG will be shot at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

From 1iota.com:

IF YOU GET FREE TICKETS THRU 1IOTA.COM, YOU WILL BE SEATED IN THE V.I.P. SECTION OF THE AUDIENCE. THE BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE AND A SPECIAL V.I.P. ENTRANCE

[…]

Doors open at 4:00pm and close at 5:00pm. Early arrival is recommended. Should you arrive before the doors are scheduled to open, please be aware that you will wait outside until check-in begins.

Taping dates are as follows:
April 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26, 27, 29, & 30
May 1, 3, 4, & 6

I wanted to attend last season’s tapings, and was in the LA area at the time with tickets, but ended up not going due to horror stories about slow, boring tapings with very little action. This time around, tapings will still be 4-5 hours long, but it seems like they’ll be better equipped to ensure audience members enjoy their time.

The dress was designed by Kirstie Kelly, who has created dresses inspired by Cinderella, Snow White, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin for Disney Bridal.

Available in Britain, the gown comes with its own veil, tiara, and jewellry.

It’s A Small World - Imagineer Marty Sklar Letter to Disney Fans

From thedisneyblog.com:

A local newspaper reporter got it right when she wrote that, after we updated Pirates of the Caribbean last year, “many fans grudgingly acknowledged that… the additions may make the ride more appealing to young park goers.” Now, based purely on rumors that are mostly inaccurate, we are being criticized for touching another one of Walt Disney’s “classics.”

We all agree that “It’s A Small World” is a Disney classic. But the greatest “change agent” who ever walked down Main Street at Disneyland was Walt himself. In fact, the park had not been open 24 hours when Walt began to “plus” Disneyland, and he never stopped. Having started my Disney career at Disneyland one month before the park opened in 1955, I can cite countless examples.

Like all my colleagues at Walt Disney Imagineering, I was pressed into action to help make “It’s A Small World” happen at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair. We were all working to complete and open Ford’s “Magic Skyway” and General Electric’s “Carousel of Progress” (I worked on both) as well as “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln” for the State of Illinois. But 11 months before the World’s Fair opening, Walt agreed to do “a salute to the children of the world” for UNICEF, and all the Imagineers somehow made it happen.

Mary Blair’s illustrations were, of course, the spark. But this was one of those great Disney “team efforts,” and many Disney legends joined her: Marc Davis; Blaine Gibson; Rolly Crump, Harriet Burns and numerous others. And, of course, Bob and Dick Sherman added that song we can’t get out of our heads. I interfaced with all of them to write and produce a 24-page souvenir book that was sold at the Fair, because Walt wanted to showcase and thank the team for an extraordinary accomplishment.

Now the rumors are swirling that we are “ruining Walt’s creation.” I’ve heard that we are planning to remove the rainforest, add Mickey and Minnie Mouse, create an “Up with America” tribute, to effectively “marginalize” the Mary Blair style and Walt’s classic (all not true).

In fact, just the opposite is true. We want the message of brotherhood and good will among all children around the world to resonate with more people than ever before, especially today’s young people. Our objective is to have everyone who experiences “It’s a Small World” understand (in the words the Shermans’ wrote 44 years ago) that “there is just one moon, and one golden sun, and a smile means friendship to everyone.”

To make “It’s A Small World” even more relevant to our guests, Tony Baxter (who created the concepts for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain and other Disneyland classics) and I arrived at the same place eight years ago. To accomplish our objective, we decided to seamlessly integrate Disney characters into appropriate thematic scenes in the attraction, and do it completely in the distinctive “Mary Blair style.” We spent many long months exploring ways to accomplish this.

We are not turning this classic attraction into a marketing pitch for Disney plush toys (rumors to the contrary). Between Tony, our chief designer Kim Irvine, and me, we represent 128 years creating Disney park entertainment and fun for literally billions of guests around the world. We are not “young marketing whizzes” trying to make a name for ourselves. We were fortunate to have trained, and worked with, all of Walt’s original Imagineers.

In the Shermans’ song, it’s the oceans that are wide, and the mountains that divide. Our goal was, and always will be, to bring people together, and keep this classic “the happiest cruise that ever sailed around the world” (words I personally wrote for that souvenir guide nearly half a century ago).

Or, as Walt Disney phrased it in his introduction to that guide, “a magic kingdom of all the world’s children.”

Hannah Montana film to hit Blu-Ray in 3D

From imdb.com:

When it is released on August 19, Disneys Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour will become the first high-definition Blu-ray release that can be viewed in 3-D, Disney announced Thursday. The company said that viewers will be able to watch in either 2-D or 3-D modes, but it offered few specifics. Presumably special glasses will be required, but the company did not indicate whether they will be included in the Blu-ray package. A conventional DVD package is scheduled to be released on Tuesday. Disney also said that the Blu-ray disk will include a documentary, The Ultimate Personal Tour, featuring Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers, but it was not clear whether the documentary and other extras on the disk will also be viewable in 3-D.

Number Johnny 5 Alive Again?

From firstshowing.net:

Oh no! Now all of you who claim that Wall-E is a “rip off” of Johnny 5 will get your moment in the spotlight, too! The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films have acquired the rights to remake the 1986 family classic Short Circuit. Even the original creators, S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who created the characters and wrote both of the original movies, are back on board again writing the script for the remake. No director has been hired yet, but the producers do claim that it will at least be similar in its theme, with technological advances accounted for. Johnny 5 is still alive!
