The transformation of Walt Disney World’s third theme park into Disney’s Hollywood Studios already is visible though the park does not officially drop its old name Disney-MGM Studios until next Monday and the full transition should take months to complete.

Some signs with the old name already have been taken down or painted over, including the one featuring the MGM lion trademark and Mickey Mouse left that adorned the archway right between the park’s central courtyard and the Animation Courtyard. The Mickey ears water tower, essentially the park’s road sign for traffic approaching from the south, also was painted over last week. Read the rest of this entry »

Sony To Ship Apple TV Rival In July

From informationweek.com:

Sony plans to ship next month a device for streaming Web video to a high-definition TV, launching the company’s first challenger to the Apple TV.

The Bravia Internet Video Link will be priced at $300 and will stream video over a broadband connection to compatible Sony Bravia HDTVs, the company said Wednesday. The device connects to the television via USB and HDMI ports. HDMI, or High-Definition Multimedia Interface, is a digital link that carries audio and video signals.

Compatible Bravia HDTVs are shipping today with a bracket on the back for holding the paperback book-sized device, a spokesman for Sony Electronics said. Available Web video, which is accessed through the TV remote control, will only come from Sony’s movie and music divisions, or through partners Yahoo, Time Warner’s AOL, and Grouper. More partnerships will be announced at later date.

Wilson, Martin, Fleischer, Ross, Scorsese Honored

From cnn.com:

artkennedyap.jpg

Was it just me, or did Brian Wilson look like he was audio-animatronic? … I half expected his eyes to roll back and him pitch straight-legged off the balcony. And how would you like to have to sit next to “Ms. Ross” and her hair? But it was a good show, overall. - Dr. Disney

This year, its Diana Ross receiving the Kennedy Center Honors, along with Steve Martin, Martin Scorsese, Brian Wilson and pianist Leon Fleisher.

Stevens, now 75, continues producing the show he created three decades ago. Over the years, the Kennedy Center Honors — airing Wednesday evening on CBS — have evolved and grown in stature. What’s “Up” with Pixar?

From darkhorizons.com:

up.jpg

Upcoming Pixar reports that the upcoming 2009 Pixar animated film “Up” looks to be based on one of history’s most famous stories - “Don Quixote”.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra’s classic novel follows a man who has read so many stories that he becomes convinced he is a knight and sets off, along with his earthy squire Sancho Panza, in search of adventure. They begin with his attack on windmills that he believes to be ferocious giants.

For almost six decades the Walt Disney Company has been trying to turn Don Quixote into an animated feature film, but without success due to the almost episodic nature of the story.

“Monsters, Inc.” director Pete Docter helms the project which will get a release on June 12th 2009.

Cage heats up the box office

Nicolas Cage unearthed the No. 1 spot at the North American box office on Sunday with “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” which earned more than the combined totals of four other high-powered newcomers.

The action sequel sold $45.5 million worth of tickets during its first three days, distributor Walt Disney Pictures said. Last weekend’s champion, the Will Smith sci-fi thriller “I Am Legend,” slipped to No. 2 with $34.2 million, taking the 10-day haul for the Warner Bros. release to $137.5 million.

The Twentieth Century Fox kids movie “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” was also down one spot, to No. 3 with $29 million, and a 10-day total of $84.7 million.

Universal Pictures’ fact-based political comedy “Charlie Wilson’s War” opened at No. 4 with $9.6 million, just ahead of DreamWorks Pictures’ Johnny Depp musical “Sweeney Todd” at No. 5 with $9.35 million. Both are leading contenders at the Golden Globes next month, with five and four nominations each, respectively.

Also new were Warner Bros’ Hilary Swank romance “P.S. I Love You” at No. 6 with a modest $6.5 million, and Columbia Pictures’ musical biopic spoof “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” at No. 8 with a disappointing $4.1 million.

The busy slate of new releases helped propel total sales to $163 million, up 36.5 percent over the same weekend last year, according to Media By Numbers, which collects box office data. The studios were bullish about their films, with Christmas Day and New Year’s Day essentially giving them elongated weekends.

2008 preview: California amusement parks

From latimes.com:

33784634.jpg

While any preview of California’s amusement and theme parks naturally starts with Disneyland, the 52-year-old Anaheim landmark plans no major new attractions for 2008, choosing instead to recycle the wildly successful “Year of a Million Dreams” marketing campaign. If it ain’t broke …

Across the promenade, the badly broken but soon to be reimagined Disney’s California Adventure will add a new ride, parade and show in 2008:

Toy Story Mania interactive dark ride where riders battle one another in a series of virtual midway games.

Pixar Play Parade features movie characters from “Toy Story,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters Inc.,” “A Bug’s Life,” “Finding Nemo,” “Cars” and “Ratatouille.”

Playhouse Disney with three new shows: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Einsteins and Handy Manny.

Other California amusement park rides and attractions debuting in 2008:

Pony Express — Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park adds a $10-million horseback roller coaster an elongated figure-8 track featuring hairpin turns, whoop-de-dos and 60-degree banks.

The Simpsons Ride — Universal Studios Hollywood’s thrill simulator takes riders on a journey through Krusty the Clown’s theme park.

X2 — Six Flags Magic Mountain’s $10-million upgrade to the existing X coaster adds sleeker trains, a new tunnel and lighting effects. The Valencia amusement park will also build a $2.5-million Thomas Town kiddie land with pint-sized train, helicopter and bus rides.

Land of Adventure — Legoland California’s new themed area adds a bounce-and-drop tower, plane ride, foam-ball pit and the park’s first dark ride, Lost Kingdom Adventure. The Carlsbad kiddie park will also build a separate-admission Sea Life aquarium next to its front gate.

Sesame Street Bay of Play — SeaWorld San Diego’s new kiddie land features a teacup ride, a Big Bird show and a 4-D movie.

Tony Hawk’s Big Spin — Vallejo’s Six Flags Discovery Kingdom adds a $6.5-million skateboarding-themed coaster with rotating cars.

FireFall — Santa Clara’s Great America adds a flipping, spinning carnival ride featuring fire and water effects, much like Knott’s Rip Tide.

Sky Anytime Secures All Six Major Movie Studios - TrustedReviews

From trustedreviews.com:

 6319-6157skyanytime.jpg

It isnt often that iTunes gets bested in licensed content, but it just got beaten to a biggie this week…

Following the recent game changing evolution of Sky Anytime Rupert Murdocks corporate monolith has announced vital licensing deals with Paramount and Warner Bros making it the first online download outlet to ink agreements with all six major movie studios.

Consequently, 20th Century Fox, Disney, Sony, Universal, Paramount and Warner Bros flicks will come to the service from early next year giving Sky a streaming and download-to-own portfolio which will make Steve Jobs green with envy. What titles can we expect its latest duo to provide? Oh just minor ones like Mission Impossible 3, Saving Private Ryan and Top Gun from Paramount and such minnows as the Harry Potter series, Superman Returns and Poseidon from Warner Bros…

“The evolution of Sky Movies into a multiplatform, multimedia service is driven by customer demands,” said Ian Lewis, Director of Sky Movies and Sky Box Office in possibly one of the most anticlimactic official comments ever made.

Still, sweeping this to one side, Sky suddenly finds itself at the heart of the television, fixed line, broadband and online download markets. Anyone like to place bets on a mobile service before the end of 2008…?
