Time-share business comes of age

Once considered part of the seedy underside of Central Florida’s tourism trade, the (time-share) industry can now boast of Orlando as the “time-share capital of the world,” with headquarters for some of the biggest operators located here. The Orlando area also has 125 time-share resorts with a combined 28,000 units.

The industry’s image has been in transformation since famous U.S. corporate brands like Disney and Marriott entered the game.

Lewis, whose Disney time-share unit recently announced a new project in Hawaii, admits he would have been embarrassed a decade or so ago to tell his mother he was in time-share sales.

Not any longer.

With construction of the Hawaii resort getting under way, Lewis said hes now scouting sites in Nevada on Lake Tahoe and the Caribbean.

“We have not seen any slowdown,” Lewis told the group.
