Apple to allow outside applications on iPhone

From latimes.com:

Again bowing to Apple Inc.’s ardent supporters, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said today that the company would open the iPhone to software developers who want to make programs for the new gadget.

Jobs announced the company’s decision in a missive posted on Apple’s website and said programmers would have the software developer’s kit by February.

“Let me just say it: We want native third-party applications on the iPhone,” he wrote. “We are excited about creating a vibrant third-party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users.”

The Cupertino, Calif., company had told developers they could make programs that work on the iPhone’s Web browser but couldn’t be installed on the device like a personal computer program. Some developers bristled at that approach and created programs for the iPhone anyway, including global-positioning software, games and voicemail programs.
