This week’s Inside the Magic to be released on Tuesday

It’s been a long weekend and it’s not even close to being over yet. I attended most of the NFFC seminars on Thursday and Friday as well as the media party/VIP tour of Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights Friday night. I’ve also been out and about very early in the morning all weekend and plan to be at Epcot for most of the day tomorrow to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

So… Inside the Magic will be delayed until Tuesday at the earliest. I will have so much to talk about that I’m really not even sure what I’ll be including, but it will definitely be fun!

Disney Mobile RIP

I guess this means that specialized cell phone services just don’t last.

Perhaps Disney hoped that its MVNO bearing the corporate name would fare a little better than its doomed sibling, Mobile ESPN, but it was not to be. Making good on some ominous verbiage last week from CFO Thomas Staggs, Disney Mobile has announced that it will “cease its wireless operations” as of December 31, 2007. MVNOs have generally had a tough time navigating through the dog-eat-dog world of profitable wireless service, and Disney Mobile was dogged from the very beginning with tough competition on kid-friendly features and hardware from larger rivals and a dearth of quality handsets. Though it seems that existing subscribers will be able to continue to use most or all features of the service through then, folks are being encouraged to pack their bags and move elsewhere by November 30 to ensure plenty of time to get numbers ported. Furthermore, hardware purchased directly through Disney Mobile will be subject to a reimbursement of some sort, with details going up early next month.

Universal’s building on horror

From orlandosentinel.com:

The “Carnival of Carnage” rolls into Universal Studios this week, complete with some of the most notorious slasher-film villians and what is expected to be a creepy-circus atmosphere.

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights after-hours shows, with the carnival theme, open Friday and run select weekend nights through Halloween weekend.

The annual extra-ticket event, which draws large crowds, is a major source of revenue for Universal Orlando — particularly for the company’s fiscal third quarter. Last year, the company reported a record gate of nearly 500,000 visitors for those Halloween Horror Nights, accounting for almost one of every 12 visitors to Univesral Studios .

Consequently, Universal continues to expand the event. This year’s 23-night run includes more haunted houses (eight) and stage shows (four) than in any of the previous 16 Halloween Horror nights. It also will feature, for the first time, several licensed movie characters — Leatherface, Jason and Freddy Krueger — and a show based on The Rocky Horror Picture Show. General admission tickets are $64.95 each.

Disney picks its battles carefully

From nytimes.com:

The Walt Disney Company has prospered by keeping an extra-tight leash on its animated critters. Publish a comic book depicting Mickey Mouse as a sadomasochistic smoker, as a group of underground cartoonists did in the 1970s, and prepare for a not-so-magical encounter with copyright lawyers.

So why is Disney tolerating YouTube videos that turn Bambi, Simba and Winnie the Pooh into rap stars? YouTube users started posting the videos, set to “Crank That Soulja Boy” by the rapper Soulja Boy, about five months ago. Read the rest of this entry »

Disney suit postponed until July

From ocregister.com:

A judge ruled Monday to delay action until next summer on the Walt Disney Co.’s legal challenges to the city of Anaheim’s approval of residential zoning near its theme parks.

Judge Stephen Sundvold of Orange County Superior Court froze two lawsuits until July 1 – after voters decide on a ballot measure about whether to keep the zoning. The referendum could make the issue moot.

“I think it’s a common-sense decision,” said Joel Kuperberg, the city’s attorney. “I think we shared the same view that there’s no benefit to anyone litigating this decision until after voters decide whether this zoning remains.”

Monday’s ruling is part of a long dispute between Disney, the city and developer SunCal, which is proposing to build 1,500 homes across from Disney property. Read the rest of this entry »

Miley Cyrus target of Internet Hoax

From product-reviews.net:

miley-cyrus2.jpg

Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana Pregnant at 14 can’t be true can it?

You will be pleased to hear that it is one of those silly rumours that go around on the net from time to time.

Miley who is the star of the Disney Channel mega hit “Hannah Montana,” reportedly told teen zine J-14, “I’m going to take good care of my baby. I’ve already gained 7 pounds. I was in real shock when it happened accidentally. I went a little too far. I’m sorry to all of my fans.”

Miley’s rep has told TMZ that “The story is a complete fabrication. Someone mocked up a fake J-14 article.” For their part, J-14 posted this statement on their website: “Despite Internet rumours, J-14 NEVER reported that Miley Cyrus was pregnant. Someone doctored the ‘This Just In’ article that appeared on page 16 of J-14’s July 2007 issue, where a few of Miley’s Hannah Montana co-stars talked about her gross habits. Miley is an intelligent, respectable role model for young girls, and the editors of J-14 pride themselves on presenting our readers with credible stories and information.”
