Epcot restaurants cooking up a world of changes

From chicagotribune.com:

siteicon1.gif

With Soarin, Turtle Talk, and Nemo and Friends attractions successfully lining up visitors at Epcot, Walt Disney World planners are turning attention to the parks other lineup of attractions — involving sushi, tequila and pasta.

Numerous culinary changes are under way at Epcot, which might be the only theme park in the world where food and drink compete with shows and rides. The Walt Disney World theme park has its share of attractions, but it also features a dozen full-service restaurants where average checks run $20 to $40 a person or more.

From 1998 through last year, the dining lineup at Epcots World Showcase went almost unchanged. Now, three new restaurants are on the way, several others are being expanded or renovated, and menus are being rewritten throughout the park to encourage more healthful cooking styles. Sony launches Recycling Program

philly.com

Do you have an old Sony electronics product gathering dust - maybe a big, clunker of a TV that you’ve replaced (or plan to do so soon) with a sleek, new, flat-panel high-definition model? You don’t want to put the old dinosaur out on the street for the trash guys - an environmental nightmare, if it goes to the dump. And you don’t want it cluttering up a closet or the basement. What’s a person to do?

The Sony Take Back Recycling program, starting next month, may be the answer to your prayers. Showing good corporate-consciousness and marketing savvy in this eco-sensitive age, Sony will take back any branded product it has ever made - for free - at drop-off centers run by Waste Management. That company will dismantle and recycle the material.

The e-cycling project is launching with 75 drop-off and processing locations in 18 states (PA’s one and only is in Lancaster.) That number will expand within a year to 150 sites - with at least one in every state. The company hopes to eventually have a drop-off location “within 20 miles of most consumers,” said Mark Small, Sony vice president for corporate environment, safety and health.

Man’s heart stops after Red Bull overdose

From brisbanetimes.com.au:

A MAN whose heart stopped after he consumed eight Red Bull energy drinks in five hours has called for an overhaul of the product’s warning labels. Matthew Penbross, 28, collapsed after downing the popular drinks, each containing 80 milligrams of caffeine, last Sunday. He drank the Red Bull while competing in a motocross event on the state’s Mid North Coast. His heart stopped and he needed defibrillation from ambulance officers.

Now facing six weeks off work, he said warning labels on the products should be revamped to alert people that excessive consumption could lead to death. Labels currently warn against consuming more than two cans, or 1.5 bottles a day, without describing the consequences.

Group slams China toy factory conditions

From brisbanetimes.com.au:

A US-based workers rights group says it found “brutal conditions” and labour violations at eight Chinese factories that make toys for big multinationals, and called on the firms to take responsibility for the low standards.

China Labour Watch said in a report after several months of investigation that the manufacturers - which served a handful of global players, including Disney, Bandai and Hasbro - paid “little heed to the most basic standards of the country”.

“Wages are low, benefits are non-existent, work environments are dangerous and living conditions are humiliating,” it said.

The report comes as Chinese exports are under growing scrutiny abroad over safety concerns a week after Mattel Inc recalled millions of toys, including 436,000 die-cast toy cars from its “Cars” line, because they may contain excessive amounts of lead.

Walt Disney Company International said that it and its affiliates take claims of unfair labour practices very seriously, investigate any such allegations thoroughly and take remedial action.

“We have a firm commitment to the safety and well-being of workers, and fair and just labour standards,” spokeswoman Alannah Goss said in an emailed statement.

Corporate editing of Wikipedia revealed

From iht.com:

Last year, someone edited the Wikipedia entry for the Sea World theme parks to change all mentions of “orcas” to “killer whales,” insisting that this was a more accurate name for the species.

There was another, unexplained edit: A paragraph about criticism of Sea World’s “lack of respect toward its orcas” disappeared.

Both changes, it turns out, originated at a computer at Anheuser-Busch, Sea World’s owner.

Dozens of similar examples of insider editing came to light last week through WikiScanner, a new Web site that traces the source of millions of changes to Wikipedia, the popular online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.

Beckham’s visit Disneyland

From smh.com.au:

beckhams_narrowweb__300×3930.jpg

Victoria and David Beckham are continuing to generate an unrivalled buzz in Los Angeles, where Beckham-spotting has become a pastime. And if the number of lenses trained on their every move is a measure of their status, then they are the undisputed king and queen of la-la-land. They have no less than 47 photographers following their every move, locals say.

But Victoria Beckham did manage to make at least one low-key visit to Disneyland. She told staffers it was one of the first places she wanted to visit after moving to America. Beckham took her sons, Romeo, Brooklyn and Cruz, to the fun park, but the familys secret day out was eventually discovered by photographers, who snapped them leaving.

Even though they are guilty of verbal naming abuse (Romeo? Brooklyn? Cruz?) at least they take the kids to Disneyland. - Dr. Disney
