A huge spider web, which has spread over several trees covering an area of 200 yards, has stunned Entomologists and visitors.
“Millions of mosquitoes caught in the web has changed its former white color into brown”, said an official with Lake Tawakoni State Park, where the massive web is found.
Experts say the web could have been constructed by social cobweb spiders working together, or be the result of a mass dispersal in which the arachnids spin webs to spread out from one another.
Although many scientists believe the massive web to be an unusual and unique phenomenon, John Jackman, a professor and extension entomologist of Texas A&M University, says there are reports of similar webs every couple of years.
Until we get some samples sent to us, we really wont know what species of spider were talking about,” he added.
The web is expected to last until fall, when the spiders will start to die.
