New Touchscreen iPod?

From popsci.com:

newipod.jpg

When he unveiled the iPhone in January, Steve Jobs called it “the best iPod weve ever made.” If logic holds, as of June 29, the current iPod lineup will be in serious need of an upgrade-consumers spending $249 on the 30-gigabyte model will be investing in a device obsolete even among Apples other product offerings.

The company isnt expected to let this go on for long, but Apple buffs are abuzz with what form this upgraded iPod will take. Many are envisioning an “iPhone without the phone” - that is, a device with a wide-aspect-ratio touchscreen and Apples new multi-touch technology.

Now THIS is what I’m waiting for. Give me a $300 (or so) widescreen Ipod that will hold more than 8Gb of media and I’ll buy on day 1. I’ll pay more if it has wifi, Safari, and Google on it. An Iphone without the phone (or cost or contract or AT&T headaches…).
