The real warning shot across the bow for the third outing of Johnny Depp’s swishbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow and his merry band of cohorts came from the cast of At World’s End. The current issue of Entertainment Weekly, now on newsstands and available online, features a “making of” story, Days of Plunder, by Josh Rottenberg.

Rottenberg, who had direct access to At World’s End’s cast and crew, writes extensively about the problem’s faced by the film’s writers and director in tying up all POTC I and II’s loose ends and myriad storylines.

While there’s no question the movie will reap heaps of booty at the box office, it won’t necessarily be all smooth sailing. With At World’s End, at 167 minutes, promising to be even longer and more narratively complicated than Dead Man’s Chest, [Director Gore] Verbinski is already bracing himself for another round of stinging reviews.

“So tell us about your character’s arc in the third movie,” Orlando Bloom, who plays Will Turner in all three Pirates films told Rottenberg. “I said, ‘Dude the writers can’t even explain the third movie.”

Hmm, so the curse of the third instalment continues… Is PotC 3 gonna get the same bashing Spidey 3 got?

Back to the Future 3 is definitely the worst of the bunch. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is my favorite of that trilogy, but now they’re making a 4th, so perhaps they don’t stop until they hit a dud.
