Epcot: Call for a refurbishment, or at least clean up the coins

I visited Epcot yesterday for Mother’s Day with my wife, son and mother-in-law. One of our favorite stops is the model trains set near Germany. But I noticed yesterday and the last few times I’ve been there that people have ruined parts of it by throwing coins into the display. There’s a train car that was full of coins and a mess all around the track where that train goes by the walkway. It’s not only there that people are throwing the coins, as you can see above, they’re throwing them all around the town, knocking over the displays of people. You can even see a piece of pretzel laying there.

I was there pretty early in the afternoon yesterday so I know the staff aren’t cleaning the coins out at night like they should be. There were way too many coins there for them to have all appeared in one day.

Epcot cast members: Please close this attraction for a while and fix it up, then if the coins start appearing again, clean them out each night and donate them to a good cause or put the money towards new trains, buildings and figures.

Epcot visitors: Please stop throwing coins into the display. It’s not a carnival game.

When I was at Epcot in Feb, I took the Behind the Magic tour (the one that’s ending this year). We stopped at the model trains and I asked the tour guide (Brian) what happens to all of the coins. He said that they periodically collect them up and give them to some children’s charity, but don’t remember exactly which one as that wasn’t very important.

So, they do pick them up and put them to use. However, as you noticed, it’s not nearly often enough. I’ve never understood people’s desire to throw coins at everything. The buoys in the lagoon were covered. The trains covered. The garden statues at Everest were covered. What the hell is it with throwing coins at everything?

I went back today and the open box car that was filled with coins yesterday was empty today, but they didn’t bother to pick any up off the ground.
