‘Very active’ hurricane season predicted… right. Uh huh.

From yahoo.com:

The 2007 Atlantic hurricane season should be “very active,” with nine hurricanes and a good chance that at least one major hurricane will hit the U.S. coast, a top researcher said Tuesday.

Forecaster William Gray said he expects 17 named storms in all this year, five of them major hurricanes with sustained winds of 111 mph or greater.

I don’t understand why they release these “predictions” at all.  They are very rarely even remotely correct, and when they are, it’s generally a coincidence.  Last year they predicted doom and gloom for the gulf areas (including here in Florida) and we barely got any heavy wind and rain the whole season.  It’s becoming like the boy calling wolf… eventually everyone will stop listening to them.  I know I have.

Why can’t they just come out and say, “We have no idea what’s going to happen in this, or any other, hurricane season.  We’ll tell you when one is coming a few days before, but even then we’re not sure of the path.  We’ll certainly let you know when it’s a few minutes from hitting you though.”

I’m tired of the excessive panicking caused by these predictions, especially when it comes to “predicting” the paths of hurricanes.  They have been wrong so many times.  Yes, it’s better to be safe than sorry… but not when it means storming the local stores and fighting over water and lumber only to find that the storm dissipates or goes somewhere else.

If there are going to be predictions they should at least be accurate occasionally.

Disney Employees Caught In Pedophile Sting

spp_2006021808021306.jpg ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Three Walt Disney Co. employees were among 28 men charged with soliciting sex from a minor amid a weeklong sting operation in the Orlando area, authorities said.

The men, ranging in age from college students to their 40s and 50s, had chatted online with people they believed to be boys and girls, ages 13 and 14, said Polk County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Donna Wood.

She said several agencies worked together to set up the sting at a Polk County home, where the suspects were arrested through Sunday.

Three of the men worked for Walt Disney Co., one as an intern, 21, another, 55, as a parttime instructor at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and the third, 44, as an electronics technician, according to the sheriff’s office

X-Files Movie Sequel Finally Coming Soon?

From imdb.com:

David Duchovny has confirmed a sequel to The X-Files movie is in the works – with himself and Gillian Anderson reprising the characters that made them famous. The actor, who played Agent Fox Mulder in both the cult TV series and 1998 movie, reveals X-Files creator Chris Carter and writer Frank Spotnitz are busy working on a script for the new film. The news comes after weeks of speculation surrounding Anderson’s involvement in the project. Duchovny says, “This week, they’re starting some kind of road towards doing it (the film). Gillian and I both want to be in it now. We’re happy to do it. At this point all of the kind of fatigue and anxiety that we had towards the end of a nine-year run is gone.” He jokes, “We’ve forgotten why we hate one another and can only remember why we love one another and we’re very happy to go back. Chris and Frank are going over the story. It’s a story they’ve had for a few years but we haven’t all settled on the fact that we wanted to do it, so now they’re hammering it out.”

The X-Files was one of my favorite shows of all time.  I’m very excited to hear that there could finally be another X-Files film.  Last time, the X-Files movie took place somewhere between two seasons and didn’t entirely tie in with the show, but didn’t entirely take place separately.  I would imagine that this time it will be 100% seperate with its own storyline completely.  I can only hope that the “super soldier” nonsense from the final season(s) is gone, along with the cast they brought in for those final miserable episodes.

OpenOffice.org Releases New Version of Free Software Alternative to Microsoft Office

I have always recomended that people use OpenOffice instead of paying for office (Office 2007 changes my opinion, but I still only use it because I was in on the beta) This just makes it better.

From electrogeek.com:

The OpenOffice.org Community announce the release of OpenOffice.org 2.2, the latest version of the leading open-source office suite. With upgrades to its word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, and database software, the free software package provides a real alternative to Microsoft’s recently-released Office 2007 product – and an easier upgrade path for existing Microsoft Office users.

Fun for Your Crocs

I was walking through Nordstrom’s at the Mall of America and noticed something fun in their children’s shoe department: Jibbitz. They are small Disney accessories that poke into the holes in Croc shoes (they don’t work in the Disney Crocs, due to the Mickey hole size). They have many Disney characters and each shoe can have many, many different ones. I even noticed on their website that they have Pirates characters including Bootstrap Bill Turner and Tia Dalma among others
