Disney’s 3rd Theme Park Hit Snag
From cbs2.com:
TweetCBS SANTA ANA, Calif. SunCal Cos, the firm that persuaded three Anaheim City Council members to rezone a parcel to allow for housing in the citys resort area, will move quickly to start work, a representative said Wednesday. Disney has strongly objected to this rezoning.
Frank Elfend is a consultant for Irvine-based SunCal Cos., which has proposed a 1,500-home project to include 225 low-income units on a parcel near the Santa Ana 5 Freeway; property Disney has eyed for a third theme park.
The Walt Disney Co. made its opposition known in a lawsuit against the city that challenges environmental reports approved in connection with the project. Rob Doughty, vice president of communications for the Disneyland Resort, said in a statement that the vote “breaks the promise the city made with the community in 1994″ when it created the resort overlay.

A third park would bring far more benefits to the community than 225 low income housing units. Let’s weigh this, a 3rd Disney park that brings in millions of dollars woth of revenue through taxes every year, and creates 1000′s of jobs or some low income housing residents that pay very little tax and doesn’t really bring any benefit to the local economy as a whole. I’d pick Disney for sure. I wish Disney would come down here to New Orleans and build a theme park on one of the many chunks of blighted and destroyed neighborhoods.
This is a standard tactic in the real estate business. SunCal Cos, whomever they are, are doing everything they can to maximize the value of the property before the City of Anaheim condemns the land via imminent domain and sells it to the Disney Company.
